Maxtor Owners, please help: New Hard Drive makes loud click at shutdown.

Just got new Maxtor DX740 and every time I turn off computer it makes loud "metal" click at the end.
Is this drive faulty? Should I exchange it or is it normal?

That doesn't sound good at all. I wouldn't expect to hear something like a loud metal tick at the end when shutting down would be normal. I would get it checked out quickly cause you might have to rma the drive.
 
Hmmm...well, a click when the hard drive starts up is pretty typical, every HDD I've ever owned made that noise. But I never noticed it when shutting down. Download Maxtor's diagnostic utility from their website and test your drive out. If you have bad sectors backup and RMA it immediately.
 
I got two identical WD drives a few months ago and one started making loud clicking/scratching noises a few days after I installed it. Needless to say I exchanged it immediately.
 
It`s quite common to get a light scratching noise with new HDs ,my Maxtor had that for the first few weeks when it was new but that has now gone,however clicking noises are not good and I would run the Maxtor diagnostic utility test as well,if it passes this and you are still not happy have a word with Maxtor over the phone their customer support is excellent.

A friend of mine had the clicking sound and his failed the Maxtor utility test ,he had a replacement within 2 days(brand new drive).
Btw my Maxtor D740X does not make that metal click when I turn my PC off.
 
Both of my Maxtor D740X's have the little click at shutdown, but so do all 4 of my IBM 60GXP's. I'm with the peole who think this is just the heads parking on power-down and I don't worry about it.
 
I don't shut down/reboot my system too often, but I have noticed something similar. No problems though.
 
Yes, I'm positive it's a new drive which makes this "metal" click. I did scan with Maxtor utility - "factory re-certified" and came up OK.
So I'm gonna keep this drive.

Mine does it not gonna worry about it till it breaks......... i'm also an ibm owner and i sent the original back for an rma and both drives are about the same age we'll see who outlasts......
 
My hard drive makes the same sort of clicking noise - IBM 600BB (60gb 7200rpm) and it has been running for about 6 months now. Also have a 30gb quantum drive which also makes a quick clicking noise right as it shuts down. I am with those that believe it is the heads parking and perhaps the hard drive motor itself shutting off.

My IBM 75gxp does something similar, but I believe it's just the drive spinning down. When I had Windows 98 it never did it, but as soon as I switched to Windows 2000 I noticed the noise. I think whenever Win2k shuts down it must kill the power to the hard drive (or tell it to spin down) before it finally kills the power to the system.

I dunno if that's what's actually happening but it seems like that to me.
 
I have a problem also with my d740xL 60gb maxtor. It constantly makes a whining sound, anytime it is turned on. I had a 60gxp before this and this is much louder. Shouldnt it be quieter from the liquid bearing mine has? should i rma it?
 
My Maxtor 60GB makes a clicking noise when it shuts down. From what I can tell, this is the heads parking themselves and is perfectly normal. My 60GXP IBM hdd never made any clicking noises, except when it up and died on me 🙁
