Both are great drives. You really can't go wrong no matter which one you choose. I personally always seem to get Maxtor's (better deals I think) and the reliability has always been superb!

I have owned several maxtors and never had a problem.

I have never owned a WD but I did use them in some builds a few years ago and never heard any complaints.

I happen to have a WD & a Maxtor in my home comp. They're both a few years old (WD I've had since 1999, the Maxtor since 2000) and I have no complaints. I do get the impression though that WD is better.
Anyway I just happened to read this article on some new hard drives on Hardware Analysis. Hope it helps.

i hear people think the quality has gone down on the maxtors since the merger. so i bought a WD last time, but my old maxtor diamondmax 40 has been great.

I, personally, prefer WD. However, it's very hard to argue with the performance of the Diamondmax series or any of the Fluid bearing models from Maxtor. Either one is good bet.

I've bought at least 10 WD and none of them have failed me yet or given me any trouble.

I've had the worst luck with IBM drives, and have had no Maxtor or WD failures. I believe either one is a good choice, but compare the specs and buy the one that makes most sense for your application and budget.

i like seagates.

I've also had problems with WD drives. Both were the 45 gig 5400 rpm caviar.

In my current systems I have 3 Maxtors and 3 WDs....my only complaint with the WDs are they run extremely hot whereas the Maxtors are always cool....go figure.

Had a 20gig and 15 gigs 7200 rpm Western Digital Caviars. Both died on me after a 1 year and half or so and had to RMA.

So I went for Maxtor after that and got a 80gig and a 40gig 7200 RPM's. No problem yet after two years or so.

My PC has 2 160GB Maxtors, a WD 120GB, WD 100GB, and a WD 30GB. All work great, no issues..

i've owned at least 5 or 6 of each brand and i've never had a problem. seagate on the other hand, is another story.
