Maxtor or Western Digital HD

im going to get a new drive. just wanted to get some input on which drives (recently) are more reliable. its going to be a 250gb. mainly used for storage.

I'd get the Maxtor because you're almost guaranteed to have fluid bearings. When ball bearings go bad, they either lock up or send your ears into hell. Just imagine a ZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZing sound coming from the computer, it's not pretty.

EDIT: I have tempted fate with two ball-bearing motored WD Raptors with good luck so far (almost a year on one, couple weeks on another). My Dad's WD100GB drive is another story though...

I dont know, WD seems to be making more ata100 drives instead of ata133 ones nowadays, i dont know why the hell have they gone a step backwards.
Eventhough people say there is no discernable performance between the two interfaces, there are acutally from my experience. my ata133 maxtor 8mb cache is a little faster than my ata100 wd 8mb cache. mostly in burst speeds.

Burst speeds are the only difference, otherwise ATA133 is just a checkmark feature. WD has NEVER made an ATA133 drive, only Maxtor (who created the ATA133 spec) and Samsung IIRC have ever made ATA133 drives.

I prefer WD over Maxtor anyday. Im running a pair of WD 250gb drives and a pair of 72gb Raptors on my main machine now, and most of my other machines are either WD or seagate, and I haven't had any problems with them for years. I have know many people to have bad maxtor drives (lifespan of 3 months-8months). So I tend to stay away from Maxtor at all costs.

I have had decent experiences with the last few WB I bought.

I would go maxtor, but this is anecdotal evidence.

I'm a Seagate fanboy, but obviously that's not an option here.

I'd say between WD and Maxtor, they are both good brands, so whatever the better drive for the price is.

Ditto. But I'd try to get a seagate drive ANYWAY.

First, ATA133 is marketing BS. Its a Maxtor only standard and offers no performance increase over ATA100.

I have used a lot of WD and Maxtor drives and the new models from both are very good. You wont go wrong either way.

My pref is for WD. Very fast, reliable, great support.

WD. I've had 4 (yes, four) Maxtor drives burn out on me within 6 months. Never had a problem with WD.

First off, I would defintitely say to get the Hitachi drive.

I've never had a Maxtor drive fail on me if it has adequate case ventilation. So, I'll give my vote to that. and because they're quieter than any other WD HDDs I've ever heard.

I'm a WD fan personally... I've been using a lot of their SE Caviars lately and like them a lot... although I liked the Caviars before as well.... I don't really know why they call them Special Editions though (SE)... they're pretty much what they're making as standard now... there's really nothing SPECIAL about them.. ??

Anyways.. I've heard good things about Maxtor as well. I used to use a Quantum drive... which actually still works.... Quantum's drives were bought out by Maxtor (or something like that). A friend of mine swears by Maxtors.

As for IBM/Hitachi... the bottom line is that you'll probably hear a lot of negative stuff about them... and to be honest, I've had a lot of problems with them too... however they are somewhat of a standard in some areas... such as mobile drives, and SCSI drives.

Also Seagate, I know little about. I've only bought one Seagate drive, and it worked just fine.

I avoid Maxtor drives whenever possible, which for me means I never use Maxtor drives. In the past I had several older ones die on me (okay, every Maxtor I have ever owned). These drives were in the range of 1.6 gig through 6.8 gig. No, they didn't just recently die either. They died not too long after I bought them new. For that reason I stayed away from them for a long time. I was thinking about giving them another chance at one point and then a friend of mine that swears by Maxtors had his drives dropping off left and right. These the the normal 7200 RPM 2 meg cache, ball bearing or fluid dynamic bearings, then 8 meg cache drives. I won't blame it all on Maxtor, since my friend sometimes didn't properly ventilate his case. I will say that in my experience, Maxtor drives generally run hot and don't like hot temps.

On the other hand, I have not had a single one of the 6 WD drives die on me in the past 4 or 5 years. They all run great.

I'd flip a coin if both drives have FDB motors, or pick whichever is fastest/cheapest. I'm staying away from Hitachi until they get their RMA process together. Waiting a month for a replacement (without the option to cross-ship) is unacceptable, even for a home system. I like Seagate as well, but they're always a bit more expensive than the other two and generally are not as fast.
