Personal preference is Maxtor. However, I use both and can't complain about either.

They are both excellent.

I have a WD Expert that I bought 4 years ago.

4 years of 24/7 power.

I have both in my machine now (an 80GB Maxtor and a 120 GB Western Digital). Neither have given me ANY problems, but the WD is much quieter than the Maxtor.

2x80 WD SE.

Fast.

I also like IBM but the WD SE are faster and IBM screwed with my 60GXP:(. I will have to send that back to IBM later. On the other hand one of mY WD SE was playing up a few months ago. Seems to work better as slave and not master HD. Reason I bought another one. FAST.

I will go with the quickest and the most reliable. I will go with a Rapter if any of my HD fail. 5yr warrenty!

I have a Western Digital 120GB SE drive and a Seagate Barracuda IV 80GB

I like my Seagate better because my western digital makes a high pitched sound where as my Seagate is dead silent.

had only one problem with a maxtor (i have 5 maxtor drives adding up to a total of 280 gigs). however, i was very surprised and satisfied with their service. i RMAed the drive and got a new one back +10 gigs in less than a week. that is just amazing since i live in hawaii and crap gets shipped here fairly slowly.

I bought a Maxtor (80 gig) its never skipped a beat... I dont like Western Digital's for one reason, they seem louder to me.

My WD flaked out, just got the replacement. I voted for Seagate 'cause I've had no problems whatsoever with it.

Also, the Seagate is VERY quiet.

I have a maxtor, 2xWD's and a samsung in one computer.. My favorite among them all: the samsung.. It's really quiet and feels zippier for some reason (I made it the boot HD now)..

I really haven't done enough with hard drives to prefer one brand over another. All I know is that I've got 2 Maxtor's, 5 WD's, and an IBM in use right now, and my dead HD pile consists of a 30GB IBM, a 6GB WD, a 13.6GB Fujitsu (broken IDE connecter, WTB replacement controller board), and a 10GB Samsung.

If I were to buy a new hard drive today, all brands at the same price, I would flip a coin. Heads, WD for me; Tails, Maxtor scores. ;)

I've had two Maxtors, and both died. I'm clearly in the minority on that, they have a good rep, but I decided to try something else - my first WD arrives on Tuesday.
