<< Maxtor Corporation announced new additions to its DiamondMax family of 5400 RPM hard drives. The DiamondMax D540X is a 40 GB per platter drive and the DiamondMax 536DX is the highest capacity ATA drive on the market at 100 GB. These drives are in volume production, and qualifications by major PC OEMs are nearly complete.

All DiamondMax products feature the Ultra ATA/100 interface, a 2MB buffer, and data and shock protection system. Coupled with its high capacity, these features make Maxtor's 5400 RPM hard drives ideal for storing high-resolution images, multimedia content, and personal as well as business information.

"An increasing number of users are editing home videos on their desktop computers. This is one of the most storage-hungry consumer applications," said Dave Reinsel, analyst at IDC. "Maxtor's 100GB solution not only satisfies the needs of this storage-intensive segment, but also provides ample capacity for downloading the Internet's media-rich content such as music video files, and operating advanced consumer audio/video (AV) applications."

So you won't buy a Maxtor due to 540m old garbage messing up? That was years ago...Maxtor's lately have better reliability than IBM mostly due to the screwed up 75GXP series.

?

Why is Maxtor doing that? Who needs a 100 GB HD now? Honestly, unless you have an ungodly amount of porn or using the thing for a file server, what's the point? And also, wouldn't a HD need to be 7200RPM or better to be a legit HD in the age of powerful processors and ass loads of RAM??

I sure can use 100gb drive. 5400rpm is not biggie. It's only used for storage.

This has already been posted; but anyway. ;)

I think this drive is perfect as a secondary drive. Who needs the noise and heat of a 7200rpm drive when it is just used to store mp3s and movies? Sure you still need a faster drive to store windows and your games on, but I think this drive would be way cool for storage. So in other words; what dkk said.:D

Woo ... nice.

Somehow, I wish (yet again) to have more money. !"£)(*!"£ ... bloody upgrade-mania ... :).

75 GB just don't cut it :).

If your into video capturing and your on a budget then you definately want a 7200rpm drive. Maybe speed will become fast if I get 4 of these in a nice RAID 0 array. I think I'll just stick with my IBM 60GXP's though.

i wouldn't buy maxtor scsi disks... Maxtor no longer makes SCSI and hasn't done so in years. BUT.....since the merger with Quantum, they may sell SCSI drive but they are Quantum drives.

Why is Maxtor doing that? Who needs a 100 GB HD now? Honestly, unless you have an ungodly amount of porn or using the thing for a file server, what's the point? Maxtor makes NAS (Network Attached Storage) deviceswhich are a more cost-effective way to mass storage compared to StoragTek devices.

I do a lot of video capture and editing for people, by the time I am done I will have about 20GB per person of video. 300GB of storage on my network is no longer enough, I want 1TB of storage.
