How are peoples' experiences flashing maxtor drives from ata66 to ata100 and changing the operation from silent to the faster mode? Any problems? Any differences?

I have the 60GB drive, and i just don't want to screw up the 40GB of data i have on it
 
How do you change it from silent to the faster mode? I have a Maxtor 20gig 7200rpm drive.. and it really isn't as quick as I think it should be. (It's going through an ata66 controller)
 
Go to Maxtor's site, the utility is called AMSET.

I have a DM40+ 30GB and AMSET tells me that my drive is incompatible, some of my fellow MURC'ers have experienced the same.

I have mailed Maxtor, but not recieved any replies as of yet.
 
yes, on maxtor's site, there are two utilities, one called AMSET and one called UDMAUPDT (66to100.exe). these two will apparently flash the drive to newer firmware, provided your drive is new enough. I just did it about an hour ago, it was painless but didn't seem to really do anything in terms of performance.
