maxtor hd problem...hd gurus needed ;]

Ok here we go.
I bought a new maxtor 45gb 7200rpm ide harddrive,.

I set it to primary master right...
the jumpers are set right, the power is in.....and i used the ata 66 cable it came with and pluged the right ends into the mobo and hd..
this is what happens.
i boot up.
and it says
detecting primary master .....llike always but then it freezes....it wont detect it..
i tried it at slave but whenever it tries to detect the hd, it just freezes....

When your pc boots up is the hard-drive detected by the bios. If not make sure the ata-66 cable is connected right. Can you hear the drive when you boot up?

so yea i already said it detects it in the bios but it freezes .....like I said.
i also said my cables are connected right...i made SURE.
and yes i can hear it because i said the power is in...

Some older motherboards wont recognize hard drives larger than 32GB. What platform are you on? Maybe check that you have the jumpers set correctly (Maxtor has 2 sets of instructions for jumpers and one pertains to older motherboards as the other pertains to newer mobos). I found myself just a couple of months ago installing the jumpers on my new 45 GB Maxtor using the wrong diagram in the Maxtor instruction pamphlet - just a thought, I fell for it, maybe you did too.

Try booting with your old hard drive again.

If you have the same problems with the original drive, you might have a corrupt BIOS.

Also try manually setting the specs in the cmos setup.

Sounds to me like your bios can't handle the size of the drive. If the drive you got is a retail, it should have come with a Maxblast disk. That disk should have their diagnostic software on it, test the drive. If it passes all the test, your bios probably doesnt support the drive. You will have 3 choices, 1: Use their Maxblast software with the bios overlay. 2: Get the latest bios update that will handle that size drive. 3: Get a controller card that will handle the drive.

The aopen motherboard should be fine.. But have you updated the bios? and have you changed the information about the harddisk in the bios? perhaps the bios is thinking it is the old drive? if so set the primary master to auto detect.

...perhaps he set the parameters for the HD in the BIOS for the old disk, installed the HD
before clearing or removing the parameters in the BIOS so it's trying to detect the wrong
drive and now hangs?

it might be that my mobo is old ... Aopen mobo
about 3 years old...


Mrcookie... I did try it as slave but it still freezes when the bios shows all the devices I have.

edski: the thing is that i cant get to the disk because when i boot up
it goes to the bios and says
detecting primary master.....hit f4 to skip
detecting primary slave.....hit f4 to skip
detecting seconday master.....hit f4 to skip
detecting secondary slave.....hit f4 to skip
it detects my secondary master and slave but it just freezes on master

I've got an ASUS MB that's 1.5 yrs old and my BIOS only handles
up to 32 gigs. I'd have to use overlay software, a BIOS update
(hate those), or get a PCI controller for anything over that....
That's why I just got a 30 Gig......

You could try updating the bios! It will not hurt (or well, perhaps a bad flash...). If I saw it right, the bios could handle the latest celeron 800, and that isn't very old. So I think it will do fine. The overlay program could be found from maxtor.

What kind of ax6bc motherboard do you have? pro, pro 2, pro 2 millenium edition or type r?
Many to choose from! Take a pick here : Aopen slot 1 motherboards. And when you have found the right one, click on bios, and find the latest.

"Support IDE detection of HDD size over 136GB" this is changed in a bios revision from 99, and there are some newer ones as well, and this is for the original ax6bc. It can be found here:
Aopen ax6bc bios.

Hope this will solve the problem!

yes I tried it earlier...i downloaded the flash util and flashed my bios..
it detected it on the first try
