Hi,

I've been wondering which is better;
A Maxtor Diamondmax+ 7200RPM/ATA-100 30 gig
or
A Quantum Fireball plus AS 7200RPM/ATA-100... 30 gig

I can find both for about the same price.

Thanks in advance

Edit: Also please explain why?

The quantum is also quiet and might have better seek times, but Maxtor has higher transfer rates. You are talking about the Diamondmax Plus 60, right??

Are you going to over clock? The maxtors I have had have been fine...IF you do not overclock, I burned up 3 HDD before I figured out it was the clock speed. I am now running WD Expert Drives. I am not a big fan of quantum (have 3 dead BigFoots under my desk... now I know a FireBall is a different story, but I would go with the Maxtor.

It would surely be a plus if I could overclock better... but I dont plan to overcluck via Bus speed...

Recent Quantum and Maxtor drives take overclocking just fine, so there is no worry regarding to that. If you're sure it's a DiamondMax Plus 40, then I would go with the Quantum, it's slightly faster. But if you can get a DiamondMax Plus 60, then get the Maxtor. The Quantum is quiet, and reasonably fast, but Maxtor DM Plus60 has faster seek times as well as better transfer rates.

I have always had Quantum drives and liked them very much. However, no word of a lie, but a backup Quantum 2GB drive I use for storing drivers etc started playing up (6 Years old), and needed to replace it sharpish so yesterday I bought the Maxtor you mention above. it is quiet and performs as well as the Quantum, perhaps even better.

Got a little problem with disk accessing at the moment, the drive seem to go mad now and then.....could be the via 4.31's.

Get either but b4 you do check out Storage Review and see if they have anything to say.

I have a quantum, Maxtor, and Western Digial hard drive.

I love the Western Digital (40 gig @ 7200RPM)

The Maxtor is also great (40 gig @ 5400RPM)

and the Quantum (6.4 gig @ 5400RPM)

I believe the Maxtor is a bit faster and I couldn't really notice a noise difference. I've had several of both drives, currently I'm using a Quantum AS as my main drive and an older 13GB Maxtor DiamondMax Plus as my secondary and both are great.

Both companies have similar failure rates so I don't think you can go wrong with either one, but since the Maxtor is a touch faster go for it, you won't be disappointed.
