My 160GB maxtor would not boot, gave date read error, bios recognized the drive. Called Maxtor, they would exchange it but would not repair it. I needed some data off of it so I checked around and downloaded the demo for hard drive mechanic.

The drive is NTFS and it looked like HDM only does FAT. but after playing with the demo, which the web site says it does not recover or repair, my drive is working fine, and all files are back!

Can anyone explain what has happened? Thanks

Bad sectors? No idea, but I would get rid of it and get a warrenty drive. Of course if you have the room back up everything on it and see what it does.

BTW, double check the connections.

I can't explain what happened but get your important data NOW and let Maxtor replace the drive. Don't look a gift horse in the mouth.

I have 4 of the Diamondmax plus9s and they are awesome. Dead silent and very fast. Thats why I was curious exactly what model it was that went bad. Maxtor use to be extremely bad, but deffinitely has improved. Id still like to know what drives were having problems

It's a DiamondMax Plus 9, 6Y160P0, manufactored May 31, 2003. I have been pulling off the stuff I need to DVD, and I think I will keep it for awhile and see what happens.
I was just wondering what is going on since PowerMax could not repair it and gave a valid fault code.

I have never had problems like this with any HD before, and I have many old ones sitting in friends and family computers right now.

Thanks for the input everyone.

I have mine hooked up to a 500watt thermaltake PS with two 80mm fans right next to them, so (knock on wood) they should be alright

The PS is a 420 watt thermaltake. I have a XP2500 running @200 FSB, a SLK800 w/80 MM fan, a generic alunimum case with 2 80 MM fans.
The drive died while I was copying a movie to DVD.

Like I said, I have never had a hard drive problem before, I have used many Maxtors, and have been playing with computers since when 100 meg was huge!

I'm running 2 DM+9s right now. And a few more other Maxtors, no problems.

I had 1 where SMART detected an error but I zero-filled the drive and ran tests over and over and the sucker wouldn't give me errors again.

hd failure is something that just happens, get your stuff off, you've been given a second chance many don't get.

dead Maxtor? noooo... their failure rate for me is around 20%... they are absolutely atrocious.

Although I must say the DM9+ are better, I've only had 1 or 2 of them fail.

the DM8+'s I have probably sent 6 back to Maxtor in the last few months.
I hate them.

Well, it's dead again. But at least I got the important stuff off of it I'm not going to try and fix it again, it's going back to Maxtor Monday.

I sure learned a lesson about backing up, and I got lucky. Any one who doesn't back up importatnt stuff should pay attention to this one.

yeah i had an 80 gig 5400rpm maxtor drive go out on me but i didn't bother with the waranty stuff
it happens

maybe in your case tho the cable was loose or something
also i noticed with a few drives i've owned that they can be picky about pci bus speeds and can not be detected in the bios if your pci bus is too much outta spec (my quantum fireball seemed to crap out around just 34 or 35mhz)

also if the drive starts acting strange it could be a sign of impending hardware failure
sometimes they'll make noises and sometimes they'll just not work every now and then
all of this could be a sign to backup anything on the drive and consider a new drive

good luck on RMA if you have to
