I did a little bit of searching but couldn't find any direct answers..

Maxtor, xp, 2 gb partition...

During my weekly defragmenting, xp crashes. Ran chkdsk... some corrupt sectors. I've got AV software running real time, so I doubt it was a virus. This particular HD has liquid ball bearings, which is what drew me into buying a Maxtor in the first place. It's only 1.5 years old, so I'm wondering, what caused this and what can I do? I'm thinking of just setting up this drive to use exclusively as a swap file (what a waste).

Furthermore, should I trust this drive with any data (thank goodness I backed it up), or just chunk it ?

Thanks in advance...

Have you d/l'd and run Powermax?. IIRC, thats their free diagnostic software. Maybe it will tell you something. Hope it's not the one year warranty only.

Mine was doing this, and it eventually died. It is a 120GB 8mb cache Maxtor. I just RMAed it.

Man, that's a bummer... I'll run those diagnostics when I get home from work, hopefully it'll be good news. Mine was only the 1 year warranty (OEM) so I think I'm screwed - think I'll just chunk it and stick to Seagate from now on. Uless you guys can recommend a good ~80 Gb hard drive ? Thanks for the advice.

Now we see the awful truth behind the warranty-reduction to one year by Maxtor... :|

Sorry to hear about your loss. Hope you have anything important backed up.

Can you post the error you got in your Application Event Log? That will clearly tell us what the problem was.
