How reliable are the maxtor sata drives comp has 250gb for 59.99 after MIR. It only comes with a one year warrenty ??

they arent too bad. i have one myself however its a 80 GB 7200 RPM and its E-IDE. however i have had some problems with them Make sure you dont get an OEM version. you need their disk incase you screw it up. With mine i accidentally formated it a wrong way and i lost my NTLoader files so i couldnt install windows on it. Believe me i tried just about everything until i gave up and bought a Western Digital SATA for my OS and music and used my maxtor for my games.

I have 2 maxtor drives in my second rig. Neither have had any issues at all. Many folks will tell you to stay away, but I think they are fine.

I will always recommend to stay away from Maxtor hard drives.

Let's put it this way. In 10 years of fixing computers I can take all the dead hard drives and pile them up. The maxtor pile would be higher than all of the other brands combined.

Currently I recommend Western Digital or Seagate.

I wouldn't buy another Maxtor HD, but if the price is right then why not? Just remember that nothing on a HD is safe and to back up anything important at regular intervals.

Not too happy with my 60GB Maxtor. It still works, but will occasionally rattle. Have to tap on the top to stop the noise. Also, it's not a very quiet drive. My Seagate Cuda IV purchased at the same time is still running strong. Did I mentioned this Seagate is whisper quiet at 1 foot?

I've used two Maxtor 80GB IDEs and both of them still work. One was produced in December of 2002 (8MB cache) while the other was produced in January of 2003 (2MB cache). Both of them still work fine. A little louder than Seagates but the chances of getting unlucky with a drive is still pretty low for all brands.

I would recommend Seagate even if it's more expensive. You will most likely get a 5 year warranty.

No complaints with Maxtor's over here. I currently have 2xPATA 80GB, 1xSATA 100GB, 1xSATA 200GB and 1xPATA 250GB. Not a single problem. I've had one drive failure personally and it was a Fujitsu from many years ago. Contrary to OdiN's experience, i've seen very few Maxtor's fail at work. From a fleet of ~1300 PC's, I see a lot of dead Western Digital/Seagate drives. Of course the number of drives from each brand currently in production is obviously not equal, but an observation none the less...

As for warranty, your best bet is to read the fine print on the packaging. But, it's been my experience that nearly all retail desktop drives come with a 1-year factory warranty. If you want longer, buy OEM. Maxtor OEM DiamondMax drives gets you 3-years and Seagate gets 5-years (haven't seen a retail packaged Seagate drive tho, so I can't comment 100%... so always check the packaging). Not sure about WD, Hitatchi, Samsung, etc.

And you don't need to buy retail just to the setup disc. You can format the drive from within your OS and you can download the required utilities from Maxtor's website (PowerMax/MaxBlast). Considering the capacity of that drive tho, make sure your system (OS and BIOS) supports 48-bit LBA.

I personally wouldn't buy a drive with only 1-year warranty tho, regardless of the brand.

I have had a 30 gig Maxtor 7200 RPM IDE HDD for over 3 years now, still going strong. think it was a Fireball, or somthing like that? well and truly discontinued anyways. so, while I would stick to Seagate or WD, my only experience with Maxtor has been fine.

Fireballs are Quantums. And they had a tendancy to have one of the chips burn up on them. I think that's why they named them fireballs.

depends on which maxtor drives you're talking about.

overall reliability not so good compared to other brands but I've had very good personal experiences with diamondmax 9 and diamondmax 10 series of SATA drives.

I had an old Maxtor 14GB that was made back in the day. Sadly enough, it corrupted itself after use, but it lasted quite long; 5 years. I'd recommend Maxtor, but if you want a truly reliable HDD, I'd go for Western Digital, or Seagate.
