Maxtor Hard Drives: Clues for ATA133 from S/N on Retail Box

I've talked to quite a few people on the forum regarding the type of drives they have been receiving in the retail Maxtor boxes. As many of you probably know, Maxtor is shipping several different types of drives in the same retail box. While I have found there are exceptions to every rule, the following info should help to maximize your chances if you are looking for a specific drive. All of the following info applies to the retail Maxtor boxes for 40GB 7200rpm drives:

S/N starting with "T": Likely to be a Maxtor ATA100 drive
S/N starting with "1" or "7": LKikely to be a Quantum Fireball Plus drive
S/N starting with "3": Likely to be a Maxtor D740X-6L ATA133 drive with ball bearings
S/N starting with "6": Likely to be a Maxtor D740X-6L ATA133 drive with liquid bearings

Maxtor came out and said that if it's a 7 ditgit alphanumeric serial then it's a Quantum, anything else is a Maxtor. Good news is that if you end up with a Quantum and aren't happy just call and get it RMA'd for a Maxtor drive. Personally I like the Quantums better, much quieter without that high pitch whine. I guess the new new Maxtors are using the same liguid bearings the Quantums always used so that should fix Maxtors noise problems, wouldn't be surprised if that's why the bought the company.
