When my PC failed to boot, the issue was the hard drive. It does not spin up and sounds like a music box (no clicking, just a real music box) when (data cable is disconnected or connecte and) power is applied to it.

It is a Maxtor 200 gig DiamondMAX plus 9.

Does anyone know what this means?

Thanks

The only thing I can think of is the read/write heads could be colliding with the platters. If you have a warranty for it, try contacting Western Digital (WD bought out Maxtor), they might replace it for you. As for the data, try bringing it to a friends house and connecting it to his/her PC. You might be able to salvage if not all the data, some of it.

Hope this helped,

Not to nitpick, but I think it was Seagate that bought out Maxtor.

Thanks for the help...

The sound coming out the hard drive does not sound like the heads....It really does sound like a music box playing a tune.

I did try to RMA the drive and it is out of warranty.

When I do a goolge search, I just get the web that want to sell me a drive... I cannot find a web site that lists the symtoms...

Thanks

if you count the tones, is it something like a 10-12 sound trill? Like a cellphone?

you might have stumbled across the infamous Maxtor ghost song - you know, the one that the company says it doesn't exist:

I had this happen to me, a couple of months before the HDD died, RUN, don't walk to the store to buy a replacement!

trust me on this... if the noises are anything like what's described in the thread linked in my previous post, you migt lose your data anytime.

BACK. UP. NOW !!!

Dang Anita, As soon as I read the thread title I was thinking about the musical maxtor thread and was going to link it but you beat me to it. (Used to spend most of my time @ TIMO).

I agree, you should try to backup your data and get a replacement ASAP.
