Maxtor Hard Drive Problems --- Help Needed

I was trying to use the Acoustic Management software for my Maxtor hard drive tonight. I extracted the proper files to a floppy and use a startup disc to get to the A prompt. I then typed AMSET like the directions say and I do see some information, then it says Invalid Command Interpreter. I got help on this one already.

I went to look to check my DMA settings in Windows XP and one drive is running in mode 5 while the other is running in mode 4. At first one drive was scoring around 27000 in sisoft 2003 and the other was scoring anywhere between 16000 and 20000. Both drives are the same model, Maxtor D740X-6L 80 Gig 2meg cache hard drives. I used the acoustic management sofware at first to see if I could get performance up, but so far it has come down. The slower drive stays about the same but the one that was scoring around 27000 is now scoring around 19000. I've tried setting it to fast and off, but doesn't seem to help yet. Does anyone know why two identical drives would be running in different DMA modes? I noticed this once before and reformated but that didn't work.

Any help would be apprecieated.

The version of DOS that XP uses to make a boot floppy is supposedly the same as WinME, but I've had problems with it not working with some things, like BIOS flashing. Get a bootdisk image from bootdisk.com (Win98SE should be good) and use that.
