maxtor good or bad?

I've heard some bad stories about Maxtor, that their hard drives fail more than lets say some other top brand like western digital, buuuut they were cheaper so I got an 80gig 7200rpm one. wuddya know its failing less than a year after I bought it. so is maxtor a bad brand or did I have bad luck?

maxtor is an excellent brand. (i think the company you might be thinking of is IBM, especially the 75gxp series)

i just found out the warranty is under the place i bought it from tho and not maxtor itself which is good cuz it takes forever to get an exhange at most manufacturers rather than a retail store.

I've had 2 Maxtors, an old one in a laptop that lasted years and a 2-year-old 7200 rmp, 13 gig in my current desktop. I also used Maxtors in 3 computers I built last year. None of them have had any problems. Plus I find them pretty quiet too.

I stay away from western digital and stick with maxtors and the newer very quiet seagate cuda's.

I haven't heard anything bad about reliablity yet, I've had my Maxtor about a year now. It's a 7200rpm, 40 gig model. However, the idle noise of this model is high-pitched whine, which is CLEARLY heard over my case fans. Now, my fans are quieter sort, but I got a chance to test Seagate's Barracuda on this same setup... and difference was almost like night and day. I'd take Seagate over this annoying whiner any day if I got to chooce again. And if I do get extra dough, Maxtor is as good as gone.

Fruitcake, I've heard others complain about the Maxtor, but never really understood it. My Maxtor isn't silent, but my fans are pretty quiet too and there is no way I'd call it loud. All I can figure is the newer Maxtors are actually louder.

ive got the 40GB 7200RPM maxtor for about a year too. id say its quiet, even when it seeks. but thats just my opinion. no problems so far though. id say maxtors are pretty relaible, sicne HP uses maxtor drives, and HP tend to use parts with good reliability

FWIW, Maxtor has the best RMA reputation of all the current HD makers. I wouldn't know
personally, as I've never had to RMA any of my Maxtor drives. But, I do have a friend who
did with one drive a couple of years ago, and it was pretty much a "call in, get the RMA,
and cross-ship the drives" operation.

I have six Maxtor drives at home. Never had a problem with them. I particularly like my new 80G Maxtor with fluid dynamic bearings (very quiet drive).

Maxtor and Seagate for me now..............I never really had any trouble with the IBM's either, but decided I may have been pushing my luck so I stopped buying the IBM's. My worst ones to date are by far Western Digital! I've had more failures with WD drives than all other combined! I said I'd never buy another WD early this year when I had a few die in customers systems but then bought a few of the "JB" drives on everyones recommendation.................well, two of those rolled over and died too so that's it for a while................no more WD's for me until Maxtor or Seagate starts failing too..............

Any harddrive from any brand can fail,however Maxtor in general are up there with the best,their RMA is excellent and very fast.

I`ve been very lucky with harddrive brands which include IBM,WD,Fujitsu,Quantum,Maxtor,never had a HD fail yet touch wood.

I've used about a dozen hard drives in the past two or three years, about half of them Maxtors. The only drive I've ever had fail was an IBM. I rememver a few years ago some friends were having problems with Western Digitals, but I haven't heard anything about them lately. I had to order one of their 8MB cache models to check out, but haven't installed it yet.

My maxtor history:
30 GB 7200 - 2 yrs old - No problems
45 GB 7200 - 1.5 yrs old - No problems
40 GB 7200 - 1.5 yrs old - No problems
40 GB 5400 - 1 yr old - FAILED
40 GB 5400 - 1 yr old - No problems
80 GB 5400 - 4 mo old (refurb) - No problems

I have only had one drive from Maxtor give me difficulty, but I am pretty certain I just worked it to death. I have no reservations about buying maxtor in the future.

Also, RMA was very smooth - not to mention that i sent in a broken 40 and they returned a working 80

I consider MAXTOR HDDs to be very reliable.
In my eyes they even improved their products comparing the older 60PLUS-models with the new D740X-line.

As mentionned before their RMA-service is really good (and fast, even here in Europe), though you hopefully won't have to deal with them for such a nasty reason.

Haven't read all the recent threads about the "JB's" failing or making noises huh???? Personally..........I wish I did have better luck and faith in the WD JB series because with the 8mb cache.................they rock............when they work............

My friend had to RMA is 40 gig or 20 gig around 1-2 years ago and when he got his hdd back (very fast, i think in around 1 week) it was a 60 gig. Turns out, his model wasn't manufactured anymore, so they gave him a bigger hdd, lol. He was happy.

I've had Maxtors, Segates and WD's.

Segate- 1 was DOA in the box.
WD's - 3 of 4 crapped out in 26 months.
Maxtors- 1 of 9 crapped out in 30 months but it was a spare and it did get knocked around a bit.

Current Maxtor Stock:
80g 5400 RPM
45g 7200 RPM
40g 7200 RPM
30g 5400 RPM

All are working perfectly and are very quiet. I did have a Maxtor RMA several years ago and paid extra to have the drive overnighted. The whole process took about 4 days.

I've had 2 out of 3 Maxtor drives fail. I'm using an 80 gig IBM 120GXP now. No problems so far.
