In this business, you either buy or to be bought. Nothing unusual about this deal.
At one time, Maxtor was in the fore front of hard drive technology. They made the first faster 5400 rpm SCSI drive. A 540MB and a 1.1GB SCSI running at 6300 rpm. The 1.1GB/6300 rpm Maxtor was the biggest and fastest drive of its time. I owned one of these SCSI drive and was enthusiaistic about its performance. However, Maxtor decided to concentrate on the low end disk drive market. They stopped making SCSI drives and conceded the market to Seagate and IBM.
Quantum enter the high end SCSI market late, but has been very successful technically.
WD tried for about 3 years. They bought the IBM facility in Rochester (MN) from IBM when IBM consolidated their drive business to San Diego. WD started making high end SCSI drives again in 1996 after many years of absence. But they pulled out again last year.
There is no question that IBM is still the leader of hard drive technology. They pioneered and licensed most of today's advanced technology used by most manufacturers, including magnetoresistive heads and sub 1-inch microdrive. In fact, IBM makes many of the components used by other manufacturers.
