hi all
i have had the same thing happen to me today bought a maxtor 40G 7200 rpm HDD, or so i thought. quantum fireball plus AS was in the box. i was pissed off at first. i came here to find other with the same b!tch.
then i went out to find some reviews on the fireball plus AS. what i would like to know is what kind of HDD do i have. NO opinions please, but links to reviews would be very helpful, for me and others. i found one so far.

Same thing here.. Had the Fireball for about a month so far.. Pretty damn quick, especially since I just came off the 75gxp bandwagon (which IMO is the fastest drive) So it seems really nice so far. I like.. I don't really mind it either.. Its a quantum fireball 40gb 7200rpm ata100 and it absolutley faster than my Maxtor 7200rpm ata66 13.6 gb drive. its uncanny the difference, i have no clue why, but it is.. my 2 cents

Opinion:

When you specify an item by part number, then you should receive that item. You should not receive what someone else thinks is "just as good" or "pretty much the same".

Under no circumstances is this a good thing.

What if the item is proven to be just as good or about the same? That'll make it a different ballgame now doesnt it? I've been an avid advocate of Maxtor, and I think they're doing absolutely nothing wrong.

Reviews? we don' need no stinkin reviews. Hey, maybe Maxtor will revive the BigFoot line. By now they could make a 3 or 4 hundred gigger out of it. Think about it.:Q

Reviving the BigFoot series is probably unnecessary. But I can tell you the technologies of the two groups are starting to integrate, and before we know it, Maxtor and Quantum drives will be indistinguisable from each other. Maxtor has taken Quantum's tech, the would-be Fireball LCT40 to be precise, and turned it into the Maxtor D540X, they've also turned the would-be Quantum Atlas10KIII into Maxtor Atlas10KIII. We probably won't see any hard drive to be released under the Quantum name even if the technology was completely developed by Quantum.
