I recently purchased a EIDE 61.4GB maxtor drive and after several attempts to get it to work in my secondary system(see below for specs) I removed the drive to install it into my primary system(see below for specs)After installing the drive as secondary master and booting, my video display on post was corrupt and blinking. I thought I may have bumped the seating of the card when installing the drive so i reseated my agp video card with the same results. Next I removed the drive thinking it was possibly conflicting with something else. I rebooted the machine same response. After all of the video problems, I had the agp card tested in a third machine, which had the same results. Testing the primary machine with a pci video card it posted ok but would not boot past pnp init. Going back to the secondary machine, on bootup the system would not reconize the ide burner that was on the secondary chain. Rebooting a few times the drive showed up when booting, the machine either does not boot, or locks up after a short amount of time. The machine will not load windows, but will boot linux and reports errors while probing the ide bus.

hda: Maxtor 87000D8, ATA DISK drive
hdb: probing with STATUS(0x00) instead of ALTSTATUS(0x50)
hdb: probing with STATUS(0x00) instead of ALTSTATUS(0x50)
hdd: IDE-CD ReWritable-2x2x6, ATAPI CDROM drive
There is no drive for hdb to show up.

I havent had any issues with maxtor drives in the past, but after this I dont think i want another one. I now have 2 motherboards and a geforce video card to replace and possibly more in the primary machine that has yet been fully tested.

Has anyone else had this sort of problem or heard of this?

Thanks for advance for any information.

I wouldn't be setting up a hard drive as a slave to a CDROM drive or a CDRW drive. I would setup the two hard drives on one IDE controller as master/slave, and the two CDROM devices on the other IDE controller.

One thing you can try on the less important system is to go into the registry (Regedit), then HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\Enum and delete the Enum section. This will force Windows to reinitialize all your hardware, and may help by deleting inaccurate entries. Back up the registry first, or course.

I think there are some known problems in mixing UDMA66 drive with non UDMA 66 drive on the same channel. Call Maxtor for support.
