I've been finding conflicting data about this....is the diamondmax+9 60gb/platter or 80gb/platter? what I'm really wondering is does the 80gb version have 1 or 2 platters? and if it's 80gb/platter, how does the 60gb dm+9 work?

here is what x-bit has to say..

There is an all-stars show we have managed to gather for this comparison with the IBM 180GXP hard drive. Of course, we used the results of our tests for Maxtor DiamondMax Plus 9 and Seagate Barracuda ATA V. These are the immediate rivals of the new IBM's drive as they feature the same 60GB platters.

x-bit is ussually a pretty reliable source.

hmm that thread on storagereview was interesting, but there's still no straight answer.
LikeLinus: how can you tell that your drive has 1 platter

well I forgot about this thread for a while, but now I'm ready to order my dm+9, I really want to get a straight answer. there must be some way to find it. does anybody know?

Stay away from that drive i got one and it was noisy as hell, went over all my fans in my case easily which would be equivilent to a loud scream, lol anyways, maxtor said that was normal, I had the 120GB version and seeking sounded like fingernails on chalkboard, so um check it out further b4 u get it, I got a wd se 120gb now instead, at first it made a bit of a whine but went away after 2 days, and is perfectly quiet now that the bearings are broken in..
