I posted a thread on Quantum's AS v.s IBM's drive, but many people recommanded the Maxtor's drive..... are they really that good? I mean I didn't have good impression about Maxtor (maybe that was long time ago).
So, what's the real deal here?

Oh, another thing, if Maxtor is better than IBM's, that would be great, because Maxtor's drive is cheaper than IBM's.

Well, personaly I have several 75GXP's and two DiamondMax's and the GXP's consistantly yield higher scores so........hard to say, it's like most things, each person has a preference! :)

It depends. From what I have read the IBM seems like it would be a faster drive.
I use Maxtors in my computers at home and have no problems. I currently have a 30 gig, 13.6gig, and a 5.2gig all in different computers.

Only problem that I have had was I had to RMA the 5.2 gig twice. They kept messing up and getting bad sectors on me. This last one has been going for 2 years with no problems though.

The 13.6 gig drive has even fell off my table and still works fine. :D Thats a plus in my book!

The IBM drives are ever-so-slightly faster. You will never know the difference. I like my Maxtor just fine, nice solid drives.

I don't understand how everyone says the 75GXP blows the diamondmax plus drives outa the water in terms of performance. If you check out the storagereview site, the benchmarks shows VERY close results... nothing significant. Add on Maxtor's incredible price and quieter/warmer drives, and you got a winner in my book

I had lots of problems with my IBM hard disk. I have used about 10 Maxtor DM+ drives and they are all working perfectly. I would highly recommend Maxtor. BTW, older Maxtor drives were not nearly as reliable.

Now, the performance is not the issue..... but what about the NOISE level??
which one is queiter? I prefer the less noisy one (of course everybody wants the queiter one).....

I don't have an IBM DeskStar 75GXP, but I'm starting to think it's performance has been over hyped. It's probably a great drive, but I would not pay a price premium for it.

My 18Gb Western Digital Expert was pretty expensive compared to my 40Gb Maxtor Diamond Max Plus and the Maxtor is every bit as good as the WD. It is just as fast and runs quieter.

With all the problems with the GXP's I would say that the DiamondMax+ is better. The GXP's are a little faster thought. The diamond max's seem to be much more reliable and are almost as fast and are very quiet.

I don't know if its better, but it seems to have fewer reported issues. The IBM drive is fast and relatively quiet (and even quieter when it dies) ;)

I haven't use the IBM drive, but the DM60+ is basically silent. I can't hear it over the noise of the rest of the system when it is active. Fast drive, nothing spectacular, but great for the money.

Don't know what's better or not, but I'm happy with my 75GXP.

Oh it's true.. it's damn true. :)

I have the Diamond max plus 40 And i like it but i also like my IBM34 GXP there both about the same in real world performance. I Imagine the 75 GXP is a little faster then my 34 GXP. I think people are have trouble using the Maxtors on a Raid setup so If this is your plan go with IBM.

I love the Maxtor but only got it because the IBM was unavailable on the day I bought. I'll try the IBM next but I have heard more than a few reports of unreliability.
