Pretty good deal if your looking for a hard drive that it almost as good as the IBM Deskstar 75GXP, but a lot less, then check out buy.com for the new Maxtor Diamond Max Plus 45 (replaces the Plus 40) ATA100 7200RMP 2MB cache. See review at StorageReview.com, decent review. I just ordered one $150.95 (just over $150) and used a $30 off $150 and got the free shipping (Ca. like me have to add $10 in tax, sucks). IN STOCK as of the time of this post. Before you start flaming on better 30 and up GB drive deals, this is for those that are looking for the Deskstar 75GXP or similar spec. drives, not just any drive, but some of the best IDE drives out there. I average price of this drive is $134 up to $177 if you can find this brand new drive. See specs. at Maxtor.com. This is a great price for this particular drive.

I'm suprised your comparing the Maxtor versus the IBM drive when the Quantum Fireball LM plus is as good as the IBM esp when it comes to seek times. Just a pity the rebate ended

Well, this deal just got a little colder, gotta love Buy shipping here in so. cal. takes one day to get it with UPS ground. The drive is not the retail version, it's blank box version (no software or cable). But, looks like buy.com has lowered their price on the IBM 75GXP 45GB drive to $209 (with free shipping and $30 off coupon makes it the best price for this retail drive). But why is this 45GB so much more than the 30GB or other 45GB drives in a similar class? I need 2 of the 45GB 75GXP's (for ata100 raid a/v DV editing) so I'll wait a little longer for the price to come down.

buy.com products come from Ingram Micro, so actually there are many areas that get 1 day shipping with UPS Ground. Ingram has about 7 major warehouses across the nation.

That Quantum Fireball may be about as fast as the IBM, but it
makes an insufferable racket. And that's just one of them. Two
in RAID would be pretty ridiculous. I have a Quantum Fireball
as the boot drive on one of my systems, and I am THIS FAR (put
fingers together) from tossing it in favor of a drive that isn't
offensively loud.

The quantum is NOT a good idea. Its older than any of these drives (thus the coupon which is unfortunately invalid now) and wails like a motha. If you're defragging, you better get earplugs. Seriously, it is really loud. The 75GXP, however is whisper quiet (quieter than my fans) and has some newfangled bearing system. Go for the GXP unless you really need another 10 gigs (which you don't, so do don't get the Maxtor 40).

The Maxtor is super quiet too, but I was doing benchmarking with the Maxtor and the Promise Raid conversion card and was getting real lousy scores, read on the raid instruction site that the promise raid card does not go well with the Maxtors. I'll use it as my main drive on the MSI 815E Pro motherboard (ATA100) and use the IBM 75GXP 45's on the raid card for the DV editing, that should give some good numbers.

You think I'll hear these over the sound of my 8 case fans?? :D

If your 8 case fans sound like the 8 (actually 9-11) in my
SC450NX/Sitka/Cabrillo server, then no, no way. The rinky-tink-tink
of one drive cannot compete with the sound of a jet engine.

But if your system is relatively quiet, you'll hate the noise...
Supposedly the Quantum LM series is based directly on the designs
of their SCSI drives. That seems entirely believable...Sheesh,
my IBM and Fujitsu 10K SCSI drives are quieter! But it's not
as noisy as the Quantum Atlas II 10K drives. So I guess it's not
noisy by Quantum standards...
