Maxtor D740x question

I'm considering buying the maxtor d740 x-l hard drive which is ata 133. However, my soltek SL-75DRV2 board only supports ata 100. Will the slow down in speed be noticeable? Or does it not really matter? Is there a huge difference between ATA 100 and 133?

PS Any personal experiences with this drive?

Thanks again all

ATA133 drives are fully backwards compatible with ATA100 boards.

You will see no reduction in performance.

With no drive capable of burst rates greater than 80MB/s from buffer, and none capable of sustained transfer rates greater than 42MB/s, there is usually little reason to get ATA100 over ATA66, let alone ata133.

Put it this way: raising the speed limit from 100 to 133 is no good if you can only do 40, right?

The main reason why I'm considering buying a new drive is a desire to get more speed. I have an old 15 gig Maxtor Diamond max plus (91536u6) which is running on ATA 66. It just seems like its running slow these days as my hard drive fills up. I just formatted and installed XP and have been defragging regularly. Not only that, but the drive is pretty loud. So I'm considering the move to the D740X for a hopeful increase (noticeable) in speed. Am I just dreaming or will I see some difference between the two drives?

Thanks

Speed isn't the only thing added with new specs for IDE. I think other benefits have been added with each spec since ata 33. One was being able to put two different drives on the same channel and use different settings. I can't remember what it was, but ATA 133 included something good.

The main "benefit" of ATA/133 is the ability to address large capacity drives, i.e. 128GB+. There is a small performance improvement between ATA/100 and ATA/133. You likely will not notice it. Anotherwards, don't worry about it. Unless you plan on throwing in some 160GB Maxtor's for storage, there's little point.
