Maxtor D740X owners

Hey all. I just got this drive the other day, thinking that it would be ultra quiet. I got the 40gig model thinking that 40 gig per platter = one platter (and it being Maxtor) = QUIET

Well.. I have to say that I'm dissapointed because this drive is a little noisy. It crunches and clickers (word?) and compared to my old 30 gig maxtor, it makes a lot more noise. My old 30 gig is soundless, literally, I expected the same from this drive.
I'm thinking about returning it to get a new one, or maybe to get the seagate ata IV .. but I don't know if this is valid grounds for a return.
Please tell me about your D740X and wether or not it's super quiet or not. Thanks.

Yep, this drive is pretty dang loud. At least, compared to my Seagate Barracuda IV drives.

I was disappointed in the noise levels as well.

You could try the Acoustic Management software to make it quiet.

Or you could return your drive and get one with a Fluid Dynamic Bearing Motor(supposedly much more quiet)

I have 3 D740X-L6 drives and i can't hear a single one of them.

My Maxtor 740DX 40GB is real quiet don`t even notice it`s running.

The D740X is Quantum tech. Quantum has never been known for quiet IDE drive, just the opposite in fact. According to SR, the fluid bearings weren't any quieter than ball bearings in subjective testing.

Well.. what I can see just looking at it without taking it out of my case, is

Maxtor D740X 6L

so that means it has the fluid drive right?

The liquid bearings in D740X will not help make the seeks quiet. It helps the idle noise only.

I don't what's wrong with your drive, but I also have a 30 gig Maxtor 7200rpm DiamondMax, and just added a 40 gig D740X (ball bearing) drive. I can't notice a difference in noise between the two; they're both quiet. Could be a "bad" one.

I have an older Maxtor 20GB 7200 rpm, an even older IBM 13GB 7200 rpm, a WD 40GB 7200 rpm, and a WD 60GB 7200 rpm and I haven't heard any one of them make a single sound...oh wait, that's because all of my computers have Delta fans on the CPU!

The drive is a little noisy, but not too bad. Noisier than IBM or WD, but it's faster too.

The noise is normal.

I alwasy loath the idel noise but appreciate certain degree of seeking noise so I know when my drive is working.

Plus..file transfer on this bad boy is FAST!

Quantum (now Maxtor) drives have always been noisy while seeking. The Fireball LM and to a somewhat lesser degree, Fireball AS drives are also very loud. As others have said, fluid bearings dont quiet noisy seeks, just idle noise. If you want a quiet drive, look at a different brand.

Okay.. I guess I'll live with it... I mean, if you guys say it's faster.. cool then. The idle noise is zero.. as in, I can't hear it. The seek noise is yeah, what is bothering me. I'm trying to quiet down my system, that's why I got this drive, I guess I should have asked first. Oh well, it doesn't bother me that much. Thanks all.

I bought one of these drives the other day(40GB 6L040J2). Seems to have louder single clicks than my older 40 and 30GB 7,200RPM Maxtors. Also runs the ATTO test slower(from 8 to 1024KB) than the old drives, roughly 32MB/sec vs. 36MB+/sec for the older models using the same board/OS.
