Maxtor Clicking/Clunking

dabble

Junior Member
Can anyone shed any light on Maxtor Drives that Click/Clunk at 1 -2 second intervals, quite loud, like tapping a pencil on your desk, followed by system crash/freezing.

i have purchase 4 over the last 12 months and all have developed the same problem.

2 of them are IDE and the other 2 are SATA, my current 200 gig seagate is fine.

This is driving me loopy, are they crap disks or is it a setup thing or what.

thanks in advance.

Clicking noises are not a good sign. If the drives are only four months old or less, they're still under warranty. Check Maxtor's warranty service page.

You can call them at (800) 2-MAXTOR = (800) 262-9867. I've dealt with them, before, and they've been very helpful. The first thing they'll ask is if you've run Maxtor's diagnostics and generated a report. If not, run them from the CD that came with your drives, or you can download the one you need here.

Once they determine your drives need replacement, there's no charge, and they'll even send you a new one, first, before you return yours, so assuming it's still working, you can transer your info to the replacement before you uninstall it. Meanwhile, back up everything, now.

Good luck. 🙂
