Maxtor announced the release of the Ultra ATA/133 hard drive interface specification today. Ultra ATA/133 increases the top transfer rate an extra 1/3 over the current Ultra ATA/100 specification, able to transfer 133 MegaBytes per second instead of 100 MegaBytes per second. Maxtor refers to Ultra ATA/133 technology as "Fast Drives."
Maxtor is now licensing the technology to companies under non-disclosure. With licensing, Maxtor will provide a Fast Drives logo. Maxtor will release an open specification to ANSI (American National Standards Institute) during Q4 2001. Ultra ATA/133 technology is backwards-compatible with existing ATA technology. Fast Drives partners are expected to begin shipping products in the second half of 2001, with widespread adoption of Ultra ATA/133 in 2002.
