Hey... I've heard that Maxtor DiamondMax plus 30gb drives don't do win2k sp1. I have this drive and have done 10 different scenerio's to get sp1 to work and it hasn't... any one seen this?

Check This post out...

Anyone else get this?

please don't say that it's not true... I am desperately looking for a reason why my POS system hasn't taken SP1 in one of the 10 times I've tried and had to re-format...

make sure you have the latet drivers installed for your ata66 controller. i know that is what caused a friends maxtor to corrupt his registry in win2k all the time. when we updated the promise controller drivers it worked flawlessly. also make sure you dont have memory problems. a bad chip can also hinder the install process.

I am not even running it off the promise controller I bought anymore! (ultra66).
I am just running it off the normal IDE port.
intel 440 board...

Hmm.. I tried to install SP1 with my maxtor and the install messed up. I ended up having to reformat. I'm not sure if it has anything to do with the maxtor tho.

I had Win2K SP1 with a 40GB maxtor, no problems. At work we have 100 workstations with 20GB maxtor's and they all Run Win2K SP1 with no problems.

I have this exact same problem- I got the boot error after installing service pack1,
and had to reinstall win2k,
and cannot boot with the drive attached to the maxtor ata100 card in w98 (get boot error message as well)- I have the 30 gig maxtor drive as well (bought the rebate combo!)

Maxtor sent me a February driver for win2k yesterday, but I havent used it, because Im afraid
to lose win2k again! I will try it tonight- right now Im using win98, cz no sound in win2k....

tried the new driver , first installed it in w98 and in win2k,
did full reboots each time, shut down, installed the card,
it was detected in each, asked for the driver disk again,
shutdown, connected hard drive to the card,

on boot up, you can see the card with drive connected,
and then when the next screen pops up, instead of the previous
'no boot device' error, there is simply a black screen with a flashing
cursor in the upper left hand corner.............

megasigh, Im stuck with this controller and two maxtor drives
(actually 3, gave up and put the old 30 gid umdma66 in an older
socket7, worked fine with no problems.........grrrrrr)

never buying maxtor crap again.

I agree...

Check the Cylinder jumper (j46). Make sure you are using the normal "master setting" and not the Cylinder Limitation Jumper. Apparently this is the problem BUT your hard drive has to be formateed with the "MAXBlast" software from maxtor. I found mine last night to be one the cylinder limitation jumper... I switched it, but then realized that I used fdisk instead of maxblast, I think this is why I couldn't boot. Check this out from microsoft This post may help.

Hey, you know, Yos, me and you have the same system! Almost the same anyway. No problems here, though. I gotta onsite tech support that fix all my troubles.

About the controller card, win2k won't boot from the card anyways. You gotta plug it in first, let the OS detect it, and install the drives. Shut it down, then plug in the hard drives. Then you get this little flashing curser after starting showing its detecting your drives.

I did that............

the card shows the drive, then doesnt boot at the next
stage, before w98-win2k options come up

but now I cant boot at all in win2k after applying the hotfix from
microsoft, it gives me the win2k screen,
and then the inaccessible boot error- the drive is not connected to the
card, ever.................

just the basic stuff, mb, cpu (slightly slower), hd, cdrw, ram, that sorta thing (only 192 here though). I'm looking to buy something good soon, too. You know, if you look around, guys with systems like ours are kinda obsolete. I gotta samsung syncmaster 950p monitor though. Prob keep that for the new system.

nahh, I'm not a nun. its just the pic.

I have a Maxtor 30, W2k + SP1 with 3 installs.
No problems.
When you were able to boot up, do you remember in the initial post screen is your Maxtor was listed.
Did you set it to AUTO Locate in your bios as the Master.
Does your mobo connection correspond to your bios --Mastor/slave.
Is your EIDE cable connected on the correct end, if it is connected with a slave (CDRW)?
Just some things that went wrong with me when i first put everything together. After the above was corrected, never had any problems since, and have reinstalled from scratch a few times since.
Dual boot with W98 also.

going from memory but here goes...

-I can see the HDD in the post both when win2k boots up (hdd jumpers set on Cylinder Limitation) AND when it doesn't boot up (hdd jumpers on normal master setting).

-In the bios, the hdd is set to auto detect

-Hdd is connected with a slave (ZIP), and the EIDE cables are on correctly.

Does your mobo connection correspond to your bios --Mastor/slave.
Explain.

Did you format your harddrive with the MAXblast software given to you by Maxtor?

my setup is almost identical, my harddrive is on ide master 2 with the zip,
cdrw on ide master 1 and dvd on slave...........

my motherboard is they soyo svba133 with ata66 controllers built in, but
the maxtor drive is like a pregnant cow in w98, pretty good in win2k
(I reboot every single time I use w98, whether in the first 5 minutes or
5 hrs)

but does anyone know how to remove the hotfix? I cannot boot into win2k,
hangs with the no boot device error
