COMPGEEKS.COM has the Maxtor 81.9GB HD on special for the weekend, only $264. Shipping is only $6 to me (may vary depending on distance).

Cheapest I found elsewhere was more than $300 shipped!

It's a good deal I guess but one MAJOR problem with the drive is that its a 5400 RPM drive, which means it's going to be kind of slow.

Just my $.02

spindle speed isn't always everything... Keep in mind platter density as well! A Maxtor DM80 should be faster than a a early generation 7,200K drive!

Um, sorry to burst your bubble, but from personal experience, compgeeks BLOWS! i bought a 40G 7200 maxtor drive from them in april, when they were bout 300, and two things went bad. First, they didn't tell me it was OEM, so it had no freakin box, leaving me pissed, but then, what pissed me off even more was the fact that my drive was bad. Whenever i tried to access a certain part of my drive, it crashed my whole drive... i tried to contact them, but my efforts were in vain... eventually, i had to send in the drive to maxtor, which i took the bite in the a** for shipping, plus it gave me bout 2 weeks without a HD! I was just surprised and glad that it wasn't a "hot" drive, in which case i'd have been really screwed.

that's just me though, you might have had a better experience, but don't say i didn't warn you...

Almost everything on Compgeeks is OEM. Also frequently system pulls, refurbs, or otherwise odd stuff. These fact are also always appearant in the description of the items. Those of use who do not mind the occasional odd packaging have shopped with the geeks for years and like the service.

I have bought LOTS of stuff from the Geeks. I only ever had one
problem, with some Adaptec 2940U SCSI cards that weren't, in fact,
2940U but just 2940. They sent me a prepaid mailing label for UPS
to RMA them.

Everything else they've sold has been exactly as described. You
just have to know to look at what you're getting in the description.

I'd returned a drive to Maxtor before. No questions asked, they paid to ship it back to me via Airborne Express and I xfer'd my data and sent them my drive via USPS $4. =)

I've made about a dozen purchases from CompGeeks, never had a problem. Item was always as advertised and promptly shipped.

Yes, they do carry plain box, pulls and refurbs in addition to new retail packaged items, but this is always clearly shown on their item description -- you have to know how to read. :)

Well, I bought the Samsung 5x DVDROM just a few weeks ago from them...it was a system pull, but I said whatever, I don't care. Well, the freakin thing plays DVD's without a hitch, but it can't read CD's worth $hit (at least my drive, I doubt they're all like that). Even after the firmware upgrade (and yes, DMA is on) I only get about 94kb/s. I emailed them a couple times, but of course they don't reply. I'll just eGay this sucker to some poor shmuck.

yes, then that poor shmuck will b!tch at you.

Anyway, as for compgeeks, I dunno, I got the USB hubs, wrong AC adapters. Called them, got an RMA and they shipped out new ones at their cost w/ a shipping label to return the wrong ones.

And as for maxtor goes, dunno why you had to wait two weeks. Maybe you didn't have a CC to do the cross shipping. And even if you didn't, $4-5 shipping UPS for the HD ain't all that much. And if you used something like mail boxes to send it UPS.. well, have fun emptying you wallet.

pfft...like I care. I usually register an account with a webcert, use it for a few months, then after that they usually cancel it because I haven't paid up, so I just make another. Not my fault the drive didn't work when it came, and i'm not gonna be stuck with a POS.

thanks I needed a drive for my TiVo. This place is superclose to where I live so I could just pick it up myself (and pay tax :( )

5400 rpm is not that slow. It's fast enough. Who is selling an 80 GB 7200 IDE drive?
