Maxtor 80 Gb 7200rpm 8meg cache $39.99 No Rebate

These are 7200 rpm with 8 MB cache?

Regarding drive unreliability, I've read lots of posts at various places and every brand seems to have someone with a gripe against it, though Seagate seems to have a pretty good rep.

It's true that there are gripes against all of them, but Maxtor seems to be the worst.
And Samus has warned us that this particular Maxtor is unreliable, and I appreciate the warning.

yeah. thanks for the heads up.

I agree Samus; i deployed probably 40 of these in desktops and have had seven or eight fail already. Oddly enough, the 40GB models of this family have been near flawless. go figure...

These and the 120 Maxtors are pretty poor for reliability. It's nice cheap drive to backup up files/OS to though. Just don't expect more than a year or so of daily use.

Thanks for the post. Maxtors are my #1 choice. Seagate #2. I 've built probably 75 computers for friends, family and work since 1996, and all but one or two, exclusively with Maxtor's. Only one HD failure out of the bunch.

good GOD that is cheap... can anyone else confirm this to be especially unreliable? man I'd love one of those as a backup drive

I have a (L06) drive that I have owned for about 5 years. My pc is in use 12+ hours a day. No problems at all with the drive.

It's $0.50/gig. Not bad, but not exactly an amazing deal. Still, not too shabby for being able to get one without any rebate BS.

A pretty decent deal can be had by waiting for Staples to offer one at a decent price out-the-door and to then use a $15 off $75 coupon if you can find a coupon.

Wait wait wait wait, this deal is for NOW! Nice price!

I don't want to jinx myself, but, I've had two of these drives working in a RAID 0 array for over two years. They are quiet, fast and dependable. I have historically used W-D in the past but these Maxtors are sweet drives and this is a great deal.

Or, just PM at Staples..... $89.99 - $50 - $5 (110 percent guarantee) = $34.99 or ~ $0.44/GB

The only problem I see about PMing to Staples is this drive is probably the Compusa branded Maxtors. (See the link to the product, it states generic 80 GB hard drive. We all know it's a Maxtor by the ATA 133. Staples probably will pass on the PM because it's not identical. You can try but....

It is the CompUSA-branded model (says "by Maxtor" on the box). I was there today and just picked one up since it was instant-rebate. I haven't opened it yet -- I wanted to come here and get the scoop. I bought it to replace an 80 GB WD drive that's dying, so I'm wondering if replacing it with another of questionable quality is a good idea. But it's just a backup drive in a FireWire enclosure, so it probably can't be any worse than the one I've got in there, right?

The key with "newer" maxtor drives is to load up the hitatchi drive utility (not maxtor, hitachi's will work and has a lot more adjustments) and turn down the accoustic level as low as it will go. You loose a bit of performance but they run quiet, cool, and reliable. Yes, this is from personal experience.

edit: and yes, I did buy one of these drives today as well. Got it for my sister - will be installing it later.

Well, I just installed this drive. At the very least, it's much quieter than the WD drive it's replacing. I'm zeroing the drive out now to try and make sure that it was the WD that was failing and not the FireWire enclosure. So far so good (the old drive stopped about 1/4 of the way through and started spinning down and back up repeatedly).

My Luck so far is:

1. Western Digital failed
2. Maxtor failed
3. Quantum failed

Hard drives suck !!!!!!

Talk about bringing a thread back from the grave.
