I have this Maxtor 60Gb HD that I first noticed had some kind of problem when NAV was scanning it and it got hung. So, I tried to reformat this HD in WinXP Explorer. At the end of the regular format windows said it was unable to complete the format and the drive couldn't be accesses from Explorer anymore. Then I rebooted, and the drive was back. So, I went into Disk Management and tried to format and Windows said the same thing about not being about to complete the format and removed the drive. I rebooted again and the drive was back, so I did a quick format in Explorer and that worked. So then I booted from a WinME startup disk and ran fdisk to reformat the HD. At the end of the format it said that there weren't any boot sectors (?) available. Does this mean the MBR is messed up and is this correctable?

Go to Maxtor.com and dl a copy of Maxblast I think it is. Run that app and it will tell you any errors. If it does you can type the error code in on their website. They will send you a new hard drive without picking up the phone. I like the way they have their system set up.

Even if maxblast shows no error, get a live voice on the phone, explain, and you'll get your rma.
