Maxtor 60Gb ATA-100, big problems on P3v4x

I installed a maxtor ata-100 hard drive last week for my server. Now I often get errors and occasionally have to reboot because the drive can't even be accessed. I am running Windows 2000 SP2 and it is a NTFS drive. I tried to run scandisk on it, but it says that Windows could complete the task. I have it set as master on the second channel on my motherboard, the only thing attached. When I run checkdisk, it says something about a bitmap not working because of limited space.
I would appreciate any help,

I dunno, I have this drive (the Max version, 7200 RPM) - it's great, fast, almost silent.

That bitmap error is not relevant.. something is messed up on your system.
Reformat the drive (not Quick-format - do a full format)..

"Windows could not complete the task"? Is that the exact error message you get? Sound like Windows itself is busted on your system.
