Here's how I got it:

1) Called up Staples and asked for a price match from http://www.mypc21.com for the retail Maxtor 60 Gig. Kudos, by the way, to Staples. The representitive only asked what the address for the site was and was extremely nice. That brought the price down to $209.99 (they just marked it up to 213.99)

2) Used a coupon for $40 off $200. Brought the price down to $169.99, and after tax it wound up as $180.19. They didn't charge me the shippping price of the other company in the price match.

3) I received the unit the next day (!!!), however, it was the ATA/66 model, and not the ATA/100 mentioned on the site. The ATA/100 on the site is a misprint. Staples only carries the ATA/66, apparently. I called them up and told them that I'd like to keep the hard drive, but it was the wrong one, and they took another $20 + tax off the price.

Plus, right now, when you buy a Maxtor HD and ATA/100 controller card, you get $50 back by rebate. The hard drive is excellent. I haven't bought one since my 13 gig, but I was suprised to find that it doesn't "scratch" or make any noise whatsoever. It's somewhat creepy.

Anyway, if you need some storage, something to check out.:D

Good deal, but your title is misleading for anyone else wanting it. You may still have gotten the ATA100, just compare your hard drive number with Maxtors site. I think if the second to last letter is an H it's ATA100. I got a 30GB Maxtor that said ATA66 but it was actually ATA100.

Sorry about that...the hard drive is here: Staples

The number for staples is 1-800-3STAPLES, and the price match was a cinch. No bitching or the usual stuff you'd expect when you try to price match.

I checked the serial number on the drive, and it is ATA/66...although I'll have to go to Maxtor's web site and try to change that. :D

Milage may vary, but drive *is* listed at ATA/100...

Just ordered one, minus the $40 coupon. The Staples folks were exceptionally friendly and helpful! Fantastic! Unfortunately, she had to call the mypc21.com people and they put her on hold for about 20 minutes. She was SOOO mad at them. Then they told her that they were charging $60 for next day delivery! Rediculous. She was so cool about it though and gave me free next day delivery anyways. So, in the end I didn't get nearly as good a deal as the guy who started this thread, but I still walked away with 60GB for $200 delivered the next day. Not so shabby :)

Thanks, but that news was released today. At the time of the post only the 5,400RPM drives were available or announced. I can also say the there is no 80GB 7,200RPM drive now but I'm sure they will come out with the Diamond Max Plus 80 soon...
