Just saw this in the Fry's add. I'm waiting for the Seagates to come back down, but it's a pretty good price.

Maxtor 500GB
16MB Buffer
7200RPM

no rebate

There's also a Jabra looks like a BT500 for $39...I'm thinking of jumping on that one.

Same deal at the Bayarea Fry's. You can also get this for 10.00 cheaper at Fry's.com (99.99 shipped).

I bought this for 99.00 last time. It is a Seagate 7200.10. Wear earplugs with this one, it is loud. Great deal though.....

I got a Maxtor 100GB+20GB free at OD when they had that $15 AR deal.
It's actually a Seagate 7200.10.
I put it in a Mad Dog 3.5" USB2.0/Firewire enclosure and it's whisper quiet.

Agreed. Too loud in my opinion. I've got a near silent P180v2 setup and it's very annoying.

No issues with the speed though, it's pretty quick. It's at least as fast as my old Samsung 160Gig that I swapped it with. The Samsung was drastically quieter though.

By the way this is the OEM version of the drive, not retail, but it comes with a 5Yr. warranty...NOT the 3yr and NOT a 1 year.

I picked it up at 99.00. Have not opened it yet so I cannot confirm the loudness. Hopefully it does not sound like a jet engine taking off(like some DVD burners I've heard).

I woke up on Sunday morning to a very loud buzzing sound. I thought one of my neighbors had a buzzing alarm clock and had left it on. It turned out to be coming from my computer case. I thought one of my fans was dying, and it's disappointing because I just built this thing up last month! I didn't have time to deal with it, so I put it off.

The sound went down a lot when I turned it on on Monday night. It was still there, but I figured I could put off whatever the problem was for another day as the computer seemed stable.

It turns out that my 7200.10 (six weeks old) won't even spin up anymore when I tried last night. It makes a hum like it's trying to start spinning, and the PC won't do anything past counting the memory. If I unplug the drive, the computer tries to boot off the DVD drive. I stuck the drive in the freezer overnight and tried again this morning, but that didn't help.

I've owned only Maxtors and Western Digitals since 1996, and I've never had a drive die. This is my first Seagate, and I'll be sending it in for RMA after only six weeks. :( Hoefully the replacement will last a lot longer...

Why did you stick it in the freezer?

There is a western digital caviear 500gb at ZZF for $110:
