Ok I have installed winxp and all updates....went to maxtors site and tried several jumper configurations

Yet....

My 45gig Diamond Max PLus ata100 drive is not recognized in winxp. The system device in windows and bios of the board correctly identifies it and says it is installed. yet in disk managment and my computer the drive fails to be seen.

I went thorugh troubleshooting...nothing...drive is not on tested compatable list of maxtor...

There are no driver updates cause HDD's do not need specific drivers...

What could be the issue???

I have tried winxp in both ntfs and fat32 and no difference, drive is not seen...I was assured winxp will read drives formatted in fat32 or xp. My second drive was formatted fat32 in win98 previously, and has files I need to get to...

I have tried the drive as primary slave and secondary master, and nothing...

I have tried several jumper configuration...the manual and the website seem to differ, but I have tried them all...

I reinstalled win98 os on first drive and second drive worked flawlessly...I benched it and ran test on it...no issues...

PLease, any ideas...even xp gurus are shaking their heads...

I am surprised usually I get more help here, but other then john most ppl don't reply to my threads....

Oh well!!! I guess ppl need to compare 3dmark scores, temps on socket a athlon boards, etc....

I'm using my Maxtor 45GB ata100 7200 drive in WinXP as my Main drive, OS and apps. Master on the primary onboard ide channel. No issues other than the usual poor ide performance with my FIC board.

Try this....

Pull your current drive off, and jumper the Maxtor to Master and see if you can get Win XP to install on it.

ppl...remember this drive was formatting fat32 in win98...it is my storage drive....

1)I have tried other cables

2)I have tried other channels

3)I have tried master and slave

4)bottom line install win98 on my wd main drive and it sees hdd just fine...

This is obviously a winxp issue or I still have incorrect jumpers, but the bios finds it just fine....

Hmm strange,my Maxtor is set as cable select so I installed it as that and it worked fine in XP,I did have a strange problem where XP did not detect my modem on install until I hit refresh in system information and then it detected it.

Don`t know if that will help but it will bump your post anyway ;).

Boot off a startup disk and run fdisk.. change over to that drive. What partition setup do you see on that maxtor hard drive? What file system does it say it is?

ok Duvie...I remember Maxtor tossing these 45 GB drives at people I'm still not sure they were real Maxtors tho... anyway set it as CS or Master put on the end of IDE 0 cable(cable is ATA100 or 66 right?? )...remove from any contact your XP drive ( i.e. no power and no connection to any IDE at all) and reinstall Win98 using CDRom as boot from when machine fires off...it will only overwrite basic Win files not your data(pr0n, games, and mp3s..etc. ;) ..uh..where was I..oh yeah..lol) this should at least set you back to base configuration on Win98 install w/out losing your goodies. (Had to do my sis' Comcrap the other day like that when it wasn't recognized on startup..and we all know how sisters' are if their mechanicals aren't working...hehe) :) <edit> reread the thread again...not sure if this will help :(

If it was a winxp issue, why is mine working? I have used it as master and slave, I've had it formatted as fat32 and NTFS, all in XP.

My jumper setting:

Master, jumper on the the two verticle pins nearest to the 40 pin drive cable

Slave, no jumper

PS, Its a "real" Maxtor, I think it was a 40 GB plus 5 bonus thing they had going IIRC.

That is how I have it currently have it...no jumpers and in slave configuration...

I have used all ds and cs configuration of jumpers as seen on maxtor's website....

I'm sure you've tried this, the only other thing I can even think of is which connector you are using on the cable. real puzzler here:confused:
