Next weeks ad (here), they have the 40GB drive for $69.99 after rebate.

BUT here's how it works.

99.99 + 0.02 of whatever = 100.02 - $20 off $100 coupon = $80.02 - $30 rebate and total comes to $50! Of course, for CA residents, that will be $56 after tax. This is even better than the 40GB 5400RPM. GOOD THING I WAITED!!!

:D

To me, 40 gig is 40 gig :) 7200 or 5400 it doesn't matter. They are going in a K7S5A which only supports ata66 in 2000 or xp.

That being said, I will get one of these too :)

Staples? They have the 40 gig 5400 listed at 79.99 right now. $30 mail in rebate makes it $49.99. Take off the $15 off 75 coupon you can find around (or the $10 off $50) and it's $34.99 - $39.99. So what if it's 5400. I'm guessing most people won't be using this for a primary drive since most of us already have 7200's for our main drives. That's the better deal, IMO.

The CompUSA deal is good, but... It's one of those dreaded TCA/New Rochelle rebates. I'm still waiting for $30 from before Christmas from them. Awesome deal if you ever get your money...

I tried, and got it to load fine. It lists as mode 5, but speed transfering files between a partisioned disk takes forever. like 15 minutes for a gig. That speed is about what my old ata66 is running at. My network is faster than that :) I will be upgrtading to a tyan Tiger Dual AMD soon anyway, no no big deal. For $50 who's complaining? :D

I think I found a better deal at Office Depot:

This week's ad -> $99 = Maxtor 40 GB, 7200 RPM, ATA 133 plus ATA 133 PCI card for free (regularly $59.99)

$99
- $30 MIR
- $20 off $75 coupon
-----------
$49 + tax

I got it in a Houston store.

No one answered this one in the 5400 thread, so do you know, with:
Ordinary mainborad with two IDE channels + CDRW, DVD, 7200 RPM HD, 5400 RPM HD,
What do you do?
If HDs are on the same IDE channel, and Windows is on 7200 RPM, you only get the reduced 5400 speed if you run programs stored on the 5400 drive, is that right?

There is a major difference between a 5400 rpm drive and a 7200 rpm, I can assure you that you can literally feel the performace difference!!

I think I found a better deal at Office Depot:

Yeah...it does seem like a good deal. But I already have an ATA-133 card. I may get another one, but, by the time I upgrade, onboard ATA-133 will already be available. I may have use for the card on my upcoming dual processor setup....

Incorrect.

if one drive is ata66 and the other is ata100, then they will run @ ata66. Windows doesn't care waht the RPM's are.

Yes, I had to go to Office Depot B&M to get this deal. The cashier had to enter a special code that was mentioned in the ad.

I got in at Office Depot on the $ 99 Maxtor 7200 RPM drive plus the free ata 133 controller card with a $30 rebate equaling $69 but I ONLY had a $10 off coupon so I paid $59 plus tax. Not complaining!!! I have 2 480MEG drives that I paid about $400 each for!!!!

Still a good deal but I never got the $20 off coupon, only the 10.

Use the Staples coupons instead! That was what I did: one drive yesterday with $15 off $75 and today with just received Staples email coupon $20 off $100. Two 40G and two ata 133 adapters for $105: not bad! Anyone know how to mod this adapter to a RAID card? I've heard that it's working with the old 66, 100 cards only, is it right?

Thanks to UF Jspec's post on this thread I picked up at Office Depot today:

2 Maxtor 40gig (P/N 6L040J2- ball bearing, not liquid) and Maxtor ATA133 PCI cards

Thanks again UF Jspec! :)
