Brand new drive on a "new" FIC SD 11 board - after boot the drive won't spin up, UNLESS, I unplug the IDE cable - I'm kinda stumped. I haven't seen this kind of behavior before. E-mailed MAXTOR two days ago - no response yet.

Do you guys have any idea???

Thanks!

Make sure the jumpers are set correctly. Try connecting it to a different power cable. MAke sure it is set as a boot device in the bios.

Jumpers are good.

Tried another power cable already.

My boot device in BIOS is the A drive...

Why does it spin if the IDE cable is disconnected?

Thanks!

If your IDE cables not backwards, and there is nothing else attached to the cable, seems like you got a bad drive.

Update, maybe you have some kinda power saving option set in the bios thats telling the drive to spin down ??

yup, don't email anyone for tech support because they're always laid back. Always phone them! THey are very good if you phone them.

If you think it a bad drive just RMA it back to maxtor. Don't call them just do it online. I RMA one back about a month ago, took about two or three min. online then I have a new drive from the day I mail it in 7 days.

Thanks for the help guys,

but the drive and cables are good - tried it on another system. So it has got to be that stupid FIC SD11 board - I never liked that thing anyway!

I wonder, will MAXTOR phone support still help with the setup? What if I just don't tell them the drive is good and just take it from there?
