Maxtor 30GB not working

I have a friend that bought a brand new Maxtor 30GB HDD and he says it does not work and is not recognized by his PC. I took the dirve home and installed it in a Dell PC that I have and when I installed it the drive just kept making these beeping noises. Could someone please tell me if this is a defective drive, or is it because we both installed on older PCs and the BIOS is not seeing it becaue of the capacity of the drive?

Sounds like a defective drive. Things to check [settings master/slave] if that is right then you have to partition/format the drive. The maxblast software should work fine to do both.

I have the setting set to master and I even used another IDE cable that I have and tried again. Same thing happened, beeps about ten times and then it would stop. Do HDD have this happen often? I bought a new 40GB HDD last which was also a Maxtor and it worked for a few days and then it stopped. Later this month I used the same drive on another PC that I installed Linux on it and same thing. Woked a few days and now it's making these bumping sounds. Maybe it's time to go Western Digital instead.

Hmm, sounds like pretty bad luck, but yea, the drives sound bad. You may want to check up on the power supply, though that may have minimal effect on maintaining the health of already messed-up drives...
