Just came from local Bestbuy: Maxtor 30GB 7200 ATA100 for $109.97, no rebate involved. They said - this is not advertized, just sticker on the shelf. Online price is $129 after rebate!
I think you can get ATA100 card with this drive free after rebate.

For comparasion they have 20GB for $129 and 40GB for $169.

Would it be possible pricematch with Circuit City and get a $30 mail in rebate? They have it for $139 - $30 mail it rebate = $109

2 possible ways...
Easy One
1. Bring CompUSA flyer to CC and pricematch and get $30 rebate = $99 for HD?

Hard One
2. Buy One at Best Buy and then bring receit to circuit city and pricematch for $109.97? - $30 rebate = $80? Then return the best buy one or keep it.

I just bought the same HD at Staples last night (STO153000U) ($129-25coupon + ATA 100 PCI adapter card $50-10coupon - minus $50 MIR for $94 total).

However, mine is a ATA 66/7200 RPM. Any big difference? I hear there is a software upgrade to 100 ATA.

EDIT: Be careful, there is also an ATA 100/5400rpm.

The box of the drives I saw at BB has 7200 rpm printed on the box.
Also box has round sticker "Now with ATA100"
So I am sure it was 30GB 7200 rpm ATA100 drive.

I think the difference on these Maxtor 7200 ATA 100 and 66 is a software upgrade, anyway. The warning was for anybody to look at the side panel because there are ATA 100s with 5400 RPM.

Anyway, whatever deal you get, also pick up the ATA PCI adapter card (around $50; minus $10 coupon at Staples) and get $50 MIR for both.

Everybody is under the mistaken impression that 5,400 rpm drives are slow. This is not true. 5,400 rpm drives manufactured today will probably beat 7,200 rpm drives manufactured one year ago. This is because the density per platter of the drives keeps getting higher and this is just as important to performance as spindle speed. There are valid reasons for using slower rpm drives, including lower energy cost, lower heat and quite possibly longer lifespan of the drive.

Also the ATA66 Vs ATA100 difference isn't really a factor because drives can't even reach the 66 mark, let alone the 100 mark. In fact many people would argue that ATA33 is enough for almost all drives.

This is why Quantum 4,400 rpm lct drives aren't the dogs many people make them out to be. They are plenty fast enough and will beat the pants off drives from a couple of years ago.

Great find. I doubt you can pricematch this one with Staples because they would actually have to call a B&M store and ask them what the price of it is. Since it's not advertised, it is highly doubtful. Thanks for the great tip.

Why BB will not tell the price, if they have stickers $109.97 on every shelf.
This is their price for this week.

How are you guys getting the PMs with Staples? I called 3 or 4 CSRs regarding the Maxtor deal and everyone of them is charging me 19 bucks for Compusa/\.s next day shipping. So teh PM came out to be a wash.

Here's a link to the rebate coupon from Maxtor. It says *any* size hard drive.

Has anyone received the rebate with a 30G drive? I stopped by compusa and they have this deal advertised. Only thing is, you have to buy a drive over 40G to get the rebate.

Offer valid on hard drive kits starting with ST01, ST04, ST06, V06, K01 and K04.

Those #s are all drives 40 and higher I think. That is on the form. They have to or people will just be buying the 79 dollar 20 gig drives and getting 50 back.

The rebate coupon states the HD kits that are valid with the ATA card as beginning with STO1 (the described 30 GB qualifies), ST04, ST06, V06, K01, and K04.

The drive and the adapter card does not have to be purchased at the same store; only within the promotion (ends March 31, 2001).
