For those of you with a Fry's, they have it on sale for $199(no rebate). This is in Dallas-Forth Worth area. May be in other areas too.

It *might* require ATA133, but that would be it. Maxtor is the company that introduced 48-bit LBA for these big (size>127GB) drives in the first place. I'm not even sure if it requires that though.

Personally I won't buy one due to their limited warrenty. If a company can't stand behind their products with a decent 5 year hard drive warrenty, I won't stand to purchase one. On a side note, I would be a little carefull with these, there seems to have been some inconsistancies in performance (hence, manufacturing problems) with these drives. Check storagereview for more info. The first drive they tested had pretty poor performance. The second one performed much better. Because of this, the odds of getting a poor drive seem to be much higher then other models. There are reports of many people getting poor performace with this model compaired to the stated specs. Just try and get a RMA for a drive that "works" but not up to specs...

48-bit LBA != ATA133

All IDE controllers can theoretically support 48-bit LBA with proper BIOS and software. In order to access 300gb under Windows XP when using chipset IDE channels, you need SP1. In order to access 300gb when using a PCI ATA controller, you just need the proper drivers for the ATA controller.

For example, the built-in Windows XP drivers for a Promise Ultra100 PCI card have the 127gb limitation. But as soon as you update the drivers, the full drive size shows up.

ATA133 just means a peak interface transfer of 133mb/second. Since a 7200 RPM hard drive isn't likely to break 60mb/second, even ATA66 won't hold you back performance-wise.

Good to see these drives coming around.

Some people don't have the novelty of having the option of purchasing a SATA or PATA drive. Up until about 2 weeks ago, I ignored all the SATA HDD deals because I didn't have a SATA controller.

Also, you may have missed it at the beginning of the thread but this is an INSTANT REBATE. Not a mail-in.

I have no opinion on the hotness of this deal. I just want to clear up any misinformation.

Newegg is the much better deal. SATA drive from NEWEGG will give a much better performance.

Welcome to the forums.

As far as price per gigabyte, the largest sized disks are very rarely going to have the best price. This is just the way of things in general.

Price per gigabyte is not important when you need the most storage in the least space possible. If I needed 1.5TB of RAID 10 disk storage but only had enough power and/or physcial room for 10 drives, I would not be able to use the drives you mentioned in your links. The best I could do is 1TB. Additionally, these 300gb drives do not require a mail-in rebate. Many rebates only allow you to claim a limited number of them per promotion. Furthermore, if you are a business of any kind, you are most likely ineligble for such a rebate.

What I am trying to point out is this is a very good deal on the product mentioned. Your post is what we refer to as "thread crapping." There are plenty of deals to be found around the forums on smaller hard drives. We appreciate feedback on hot deals so long as they are productive.

Again, welcome to the forums. :D

Just to set the facts straight, the drive at CompUSA is a retail kit drive, is $199 without any rebate required, and includes a SATA cable.

The drive at Newegg is an OEM drive and has no cable.

So, for approx. $4 more (because I incl. sales tax for CompUSA price), you get the retail drive at CompUSA. And you get it now, not "who knows when" which is the current state of affairs with Newegg's order fulfillment, they have lost the crown for sure ...

so 200gb x 2 = 400gb for less then 200.00 plus twice as fast if your raid them.

Don't forget, unless you live in CA, Newegg and ZipZoomFly are *tax free*. Very big point for me for ordering online.

Edit: I forgot about NJ and somewhere else for Newegg. But yes, no tax is a big thing for me. I'd effectively be paying $14 tax if I bought this drive from CompUSSR. I've got two of them from ZipZoomFly right here on my desk :D

If you go to Maxtor's website and check out the part number for Newegg versus CompUSA you'll see the Newegg drive says it's SATA II, the CompUSA drive does not. The specs are PDF's, so I won't bother linking them. I hate viewing PDF's in FireFox, it takes forever to close out of them.

i got my Maxtor 300GB HD today from CompUSA for $199. It was a DiamondMax Plus SATA/150 w/ 16mb cache. If you check Maxtor's website - Any drive shipped after September 14, 2004 - the drive will have a 3 year warranty... I would imagine that SATA/150 16mb drives would be covered under this statement seeing that Maxtor did their press release for the new drives on September 13th.

Please check your facts before posting!
