It *might* require ATA133, but that would be it. Maxtor is the company that introduced 48-bit LBA for these big (size>127GB) drives in the first place. I'm not even sure if it requires that though.

Some people don't have the novelty of having the option of purchasing a SATA or PATA drive. Up until about 2 weeks ago, I ignored all the SATA HDD deals because I didn't have a SATA controller.
Also, you may have missed it at the beginning of the thread but this is an INSTANT REBATE. Not a mail-in.
I have no opinion on the hotness of this deal. I just want to clear up any misinformation.
