Take a look at the linked rebate form, it's for $50. This has been talked about elsewhere on AT and over at the chubby billfold. It's a typo, and neither one, Staples or Maxtor will honor a larger rebate.

The actual rebate is $50.

I think you got things a little backward. That rebate you linked is for $50 so you end up paying $200 for the drive.

Maybe someone should email and as Staples about this. I don't think staple will eat up $200 for each sale they made on this hard drive. I mean $50 they can do, but $200. I just made $50 off of staple today. Bought a copier for $200-$50 coupon=$150.. it was sh**ty so I went return it, they return me $200.

Outpost has the Western Digital 200GB 7200RPM 8MB cache hard drive for $159.99 AR this week:

link

$259.99
- $100 MIR
--------------------
$159.99 AR

Personally, in terms of performance, reliability etc., I don't have a preference between the two. Maxtor might be slightly faster because they have faster seek time than WD. But WD has 3 yr warranty while Maxtor only has 1 yr. So price pretty much determines my choice when I need a 8MB cache IDE drive.

I posted a deal where you could get the 200MB Maxtor (8MB Cache) for $149.99 from CompUSA earlier:

Linky

Perhaps there's a way to combine the two? PM or something?

Enjoy

Bought this drive last night w/o checking the rebate, called in today, CSR said that it was an error and I will have to cancel the order.

But thanks to ChubbyFrog for informing that compusa is having it for $150 after rebate, I mentioned that to the CSR, and he said sure, but he will only PM to 199.99 because of the $50 staples rebate.

Credit me back $119, so I paid:

$299.99 - $50 coupon = $249.99 + $20.6 tax
= ~$270 - $119 PM = $151 - $50 MIR = $101 after tax

Is this a good price? I don't really need more HD space, but I thought $0.50 a gig (out the door price) is pretty good. any opinions?

Do people not understand what "out the door" means? You don't.

Out the door. Money you actually paid for it (NO MIR)
You paid $151 out the door. ($0.76 per gig)
And AR you paid $101.

Take it easy dude. What I meant was "after tax price" when I wrote "out the door price", I forgot about the MIR for a second. It was a mistake. I wanted to emphasize that the $101 included tax, that's all.

Nonetheless, I just wanted to point out the PMing opportunity for other who bought the drive.

Deal looks dead - can't find the Maxtor 200GB internal HD on Staples.com anymore - can only find the External 200GB HD.

Anyone else find it?
