Can anyone point me to a discussion on Maxtor's quality?
I haven't looked at HDDs lately

My experience with them has been that they are crap, but I've only owned one Maxtor in the last 2 years or so, and it was secondhand. The thing didn't have any bad sectors, but it was loud as can be. I could actually hear it grinding over my 60-something CFM fan. Before that, I owned three Maxtor drives, and every single one of them went bad within 18 months. I hear their quality has improved now, but I can't say for sure. All I can say is that I've had an awful experience with them. Then again, some people swear Seagate or WD are junk, and every one of their drives I've owned has been great.

I had one Maxtor ages ago that lasted years and died just before the warranty, 3 or 4 years at the time, was up. They replaced it with no problems. Actually the replacement ws a Colorado drive. Maxtor bought Colorado. Going from memory here, it may have been a Seagate that failed; then Seagate bought Colorado and swaped me out with a Colorado drive. I gave the replacement to a friend and it has not failed in many years.

Second Maxtor (133) I got has been trucking away with no problems.

I noticed in my old case that my WD ATA100 drives made considerably more noise then my ultra-quite Maxtor. I can't notice any sound from my new case other than the fan.

From all the online posts I've seen over the years, for every user who had probs with Maxtor and loves WD, there's a user who had probs with WD and loves Maxtor. I think many may regard Hitachi a little above the two and it seems that everyone loves Seagate and their warranty. I think that's the correct summary.

I've only had the one drive die in over 20-years.
My current Maxtor 80GB/133 is great.
I've noticed that CompUSA branded HD's have been Maxtor OEM in the past.

Pretty much spot-on. I've noticed the same thing too, I just have had bad luck with Maxtors. Maxtor is all CompUSA carries, by the way. As far as Hitachi, they used to be garbage when they were partnered with IBM (back in the days of the infamous "Deathstar/Deskstar" series of drives). Seagate's warranty is great, and they're my current favorite, although I've never had a problem with WD. Plenty of people love Maxtor and hate the rest, though, so I guess it's luck of the draw.

Well I'm using it for a backup drive... so I don't particularly care if it's *omgwtfawesome* :)

This is just from my personal experience, but I would particularly care if it's *omfgdeadaweekafterthewarrantyrunsout* :)

Again, plenty of people have never had problems with Maxtor drives; it just seems like every one I get is a lemon. Hopefully you'll have better luck than I did with Maxtor (which shouldn't be hard!)

I have had quite a few of maxtors over the past 5 years or so when I started using them. Mainly because of price and some reviews saying they were quiet. Anyhow I bought a 60 giger about 3 years ago to use to keep my data while I preformed an upgrade to my comp. I copied over my files after the upgrade but got kind of lazy and didn't move my wifes files back right away. Well as it turned out she ended up losing her files the drive took a nose dive within the first month.

I have owned maxtors and western digitals over the years and have sent back several drives from both companies. I don't say one is crap just because I get a bad one. It happens when you make that many drives. What I don't like is the one year warranty and the fact that my above drive that was less than a month old and was replaced with a refurbed drive.

I had 2 boxes with 2 maxtors raid 0 in each up until december. I lost all 4 drives within about a month. However I attribute the loss to the lightning strike that hit my cable modem back in september. It trashed everything on my network including my motherboard in my machine. I have one maxtor left from my old rig and I just have it sitting for now. I am waiting for a good deal to come down the pike so I can plug it in and copy my files over to the new one.

All in all I would buy another maxtor if their warranty was longer. Since they are one year I am going to pass. Most of the drives that I have returned over the years were over 2 years old. Therefore I won't buy a drive unless it has at least a 3 year warranty. That just me and my opinon though. You know what opinons are like. ;)

Depend on how you use.

according to my personal experience:
1st class: seagate, samsung
2nd class: Western Digital, maxtor
3rd class: hitachi(ibm)

...

I do video editing, backup system.
Samsung was the quietest, ibm gave me too much problem and was kinda slower. Still using my old 20&30gb samsung. works great and quiet! Maxtor seems to be ok. So far so good. I use 80mm fan to cool my hard drives.

I've probably owned a dozen or more Maxtor HD over the years-probably more like two dozen. They are perfectly acceptable. I've only had one fail and that was at least two years old. My main drive now is a Maxtor that has been running 24/7 for three-four years.

I like Western Digitals and Seagates better, because they tend to be quieter and cooler. I don't like how most Maxtors have a one year warranty now. But I wouldn't hestitate to buy a Maxtor if I needed it and the price was right.

Hitachi, on the other hand, I've only had one. It failed after a month or two and it was pulling teeth to get it replaced.

200 GB for $50 is a pretty good deal, in my eyes. Odds are this has a one year warranty though, if that matters to you.

I've got a pair of Maxtor 120GB ATA133 drives that I've had for about 5 years now. I've reformatted them dozens of times using them in about 7 different incarnations of my gaming rig, with nary a hiccup, let alone any bad sectors. On the other hand, a few years ago, me & a friend bought 4 identical WD 120GB drives, and all 4 were either DOA or had bad sectors, so as was pointed out earlier, it's all luck of the draw.

Just remember,
use a good power supply for your hd.
I used to have problems with hd, until I switched to a more powerful and reliable hd.
they used to give me sector errors, and kept checking the drives at bootup.
now, I don't have problems at all. The seagates are great, and I've used maxtors for a long time. No problem here

Tempting. I also noticed that compusa is gonna have the sony dvdr's - 50 pack - on sale for 14.99. I was there earlier today and the dvd+r's were made in japan. I'll be there tomorrow if not for the hdd's definitely for the dvdr's.

I am picking this up tomorrow in conjunction with a 3.5" External USB case, so I can use it like a backup drive as I need to :)

I've never liked Maxtor drives. I don't trust drives with only 1-year rebates, and usually Maxtor drives fail more quickly than others (in my experience)
