Maxtor 16mb cache worth the extra $$?

I just set up my Windows 2003 Server and installed VS.Net Enterprise Architect, SQL Server 2000 Enterprise and will be adding Exchange also. I built it up with the purpose of learning the ins and outs of Server 2003, and as a development environment.

After looking at everything I could do with the server I am setting it up as a file storage server also. It will be in my living room hooked up to my stereo and tv for multimedia eventually. A few buddies of mine and I are going to put our own storage drives in there so we each have a drive for ourselves but I will be the primary user.

So I really don't need that much storage nor super fast speeds, just something decent. I have 320g in my desktop and don't really need too much more on the server, just would be nice to put some where its accessible elsewhere as the server is in the DMZ and will soon be on the VPN.

I am looking at prices of Maxtor 16mb cache drives (200 and 250 gig) and wondering if it is worth spending the extra money vs getting a WD 200 gig with rebates for about half the price but only 8mb cache.

As I mentioned, I will pretty much be the only one accessing the drive at any given time.

Any opinions?

My 300GB 16MB Maxtor IDE drive actually scores about 2% higher on benchmark tests than my 10K 18GB Seagate SCSI drive. Granted, the SCSI drive is old, but I was impressed by the Maxtor's speed. Let's see if it lasts more than three months.

You pretty much answered your own question, by saying multiple times the speed isn't important. Yes, the Maxtor is slightly faster, but for a system that will be bottlenecked by the LAN connection long before the HD's will sweat, there is no way I would pay nearly twice as much for the Maxtor. No brainer, get the WD.

thats Pariah, that makes sense... haha I guess I just needed my thoughts confirmed. my buddies kept telling me to get the 16mb maxtor but I was having a hard time justifying the extra $$.
