Maxtor 160GB 7200 RPM internal hard drive for $69.94 out the door. No rebate required.

SKU: 504516

Sale runs from March 20 - April 2

Yes, it's PATA
Yes, it's only got a 1 year warranty (but you can double that for ~ $8 more with Staples Product Replacement Plan) vs. Seagates 5 year.

Thats an alright deal.

It is not uncommon to find this model for $75-$35 rebate or $80-$40.

The rebate risk is worth it for only 5-10 dollars more. Especially the new EasyRebate system staples put into place.

Good if you are in a pinch, but otherwise not so hot.

Got one of these last time - although I gues I actually got two. First one was DOA. Second one is still running, although it's rather loud.

Dang... starts March 20th? Hehehe, I guess they don't want us to use the 12% off coupon that's going around. Still nice deal, thanks OP!

If its too loud, you can try and run AMSET utility.

DOS Based utility, to change the unit to /quiet mode.

May loose some speed.

Good deal but its just getting too hard to back up 160 gigs regularly. If this had a 3 or 5 yr warr. I'd jump but whats the point. If the builder doesn't expect it to go past 1 yr why should I? Frow what I hear there is a very good chance of not making it to the second year. Anyone know what the failure rate is?

Amset dosen't work on computers with nforce/2/3/4 chipsets and most non "generic" chipsets. Try the accoustic managment part of the hitachi drive utility, it works great with maxtor drives on pretty much any chipset and is available as a free download from hitachi's site. Also their utility has about 200 increments from quiet to loud, whereas maxtor only has three total.

Don't get this drive, I had it in a server in Raid 1 and one of them failed in 6 months. Not worth it.

So we can safely assume that all of the drives will do this?

I have had two of these drives working great in a RAID 0 stripe doing heavy video capturing and file sharing work and they have been rock solid and very fast.
