Hiya Jen-

Didya get the HD I sent already...? or did you get another too?
Anyhow, either way, I saw your post and wanted to help, though I am not sure I have such good news :-\
According to Maxtor's site:

"Windows 98, Millennium Edition (ME), NT and 2000 operating systems do not currently recognize the full capacity of a hard drive larger than 137 GB."

Linky

I can't say about updates for any 9x operating system or NT, but I do know that my Windows 2000 Server system with Abit KR7A-133R did in fact recognize the 160GB drive (that was where it came from)...

However, i also found this which seems to say almost the opposite...

Maybe you need to use the MaxBlast software (unless you already are) to install the drive @ full capacity?

Hope this helped somewhat. Good luck!!

Hi Dan

what i am trying to do is split this into as many pieces as necessary in order for it to work in windows 98se. i was told i needed a bios flash in order for 48 bit to work properly. that i have done.

i havent recieved your drive yet. this is a second drive that was sent to me a week ago and trying to get it to work properly in windows 98se. as many of my apps only will work in 98 .

Jen-

In a timely read of this months (Dec 2002) issue of MaximumPC they say "... only Microsoft Windows XP and 2000 have official support." for 48-bit addressing for hard drives larger than 137GB. So, it seems that even though your motherboard supports and recognizes the drive, Windows 9x/ME won't recognize the full capacity. The small article only mentions using an add-in PCI IDE controller card for fixing the issue of an older motherboard not supporting larger hard drives.

Hopefully, someone else knows of a way to get Windows 98 to recognize the full capacity of the drive...

On another note, from experience, I have found that many of the older apps I have tested/tried seem to work very well with Windows XP (even some old DOS games). Windows XP does a fairly good job with its "compatibility modes" (you can install a program and have Windows XP run it using DOS, Windows 95, 95, ME or 2000 style with registry entries/file locations to match older Windows OSes). Though, perhaps if you are using specialized apps for Windows 98 they may not work or work more slowly... Maybe if you let me know a couple of the apps you need to use I may have experience with the app and Windows XP and can let you know if they work?

Well, either way, good luck!! Let me know if I can be of any more help (assuming I helped at all ;))

Compatbility mode is available under Windows 2000 as well. It just requires the following program to be run via the run icon on the start menu: "regsvr32 %systemroot%\apppatch\slayerui.dll" Once this program is run, the compatibility tab will be available on shortcuts.
