Maxthon instead of IE

i use firefox as my default browser but every now and then some sites don't display properly and there's also windows update so i end up having to use IE from time to time...

just wondering if i could install Maxthon and get rid of IE so that windows update and the "view in IE" firefox extension will launch maxthon instead of IE so that i never have to use IE again...

i'm at work right now so i can't test it but i think that just installing maxthon and having it as non-default browser will just render it useless because IE will automatically launch with WU.

I'll take a wild guess and say "no". I have tried Win update with FireFox, Mozilla, and Opera with no luck, so there is no getting rid of IE, not that you should try anyway. Just accept IE as necessary evil until MS detaches it from Windows which they promised to do in Longhorn. Even then, I wouldn't be surprised if they would still lock update to IE.

well i figure since maxthon is based on the IE core it can at the very least handle WU...

Windows Update uses ActiveX. The only browser capable of ActiveX is IE, last I knew. If you don't want to use IE for Windows Update, you can alternately enable Automatic Updates, or else use Microsoft Baseline Security Analyzer to find your missing patches and then download and apply them manually. But you're just being silly about this

lol yeah i guess

i just think maxthon looks neat and wanna give it a shot but i'm pretty loyal to firefox and maxthon would be an ideal IE replacement...
