Maxline with no NCQ vs. Raptor?

Well I know you have seen about 20 Raptor threads (I searched them all and read them all) but I have not seen anything on the comparison of the Maxtor MaxLine III with NCQ off and the 74gb Raptor. Space is NOT AN ISSUE. I just need a fast primary drive for some heavy photoshop work and gaming. Media will be stored on auxilary drives.

Athlon FX-53 (940)
ASUS Sk8n Mobo
4x 512mb OCZ Registered PC3200
Geforce 6800 Ultra AGP
Audigy Gamer (Probably has nothing to do with anyhting 😛)

So yea, my question is, since I cant use NCQ and I dont plan on upgrading my mobo, graphics card AND cpu any time soon, which is better, the Maxtor MaxLine III or 74gb Raptor.

I am so sorry for bothering you with yet another boring "Which is better, Raptor or...." Post. I am especially sorry because I am a "n00b" on this forum :/ But any advice would be awesome.

Thanks!

The Raptor is going to smoke that Maxline either way. IMO however, you'll be better off buying a large drive instead of a 74 gig Raptor. The space against slightly better performance (that is actually noticeable) means the space wins in my book.

Well that raptor won't be THAT much more faster but if you are really going to top performance the Raptor does have a bit lower seek times. It really depends if you already have some other large storage drives just grab the Raptor if you don't then the Maxline would be sweet the best bet.

Well I already have 240gb for extra stuff. Just hoping to get as many opinions as I can get 🙂 I know there are some super anti-raptor fanatics. Oh and those 15,000rpm SCSI fanatics haha.

Being a owner of both the 36 and 74gig Raptor, the performance is not worth the money. Just go with a larger 7200RPM 8mb SATA drive.

Ok now I am just confusing myself. Would not saying "The Raptor only wins by a significant margin in server usage patterns" mean that the Raptor wins by a large amount?

I think he meant that, yes, the raptor wins by a lot, but only in server usage patterns. Therefore, their performance in ordinary tasks like photoshop work and gaming doesn't justify their cost.
