Maximus Formula and raid

This is the strangest thing I've encountered in a long time. I've set up a ASUS Maximus x38 board with (initially) two 250gb Seagate drives in raid 1 (mirror). I proceeded to load a clean copy of XPpro sp2 and all went well. Starts OK etc.etc.

I then added a third drive which the ICH9R registered as a non-raid drive. This drive was to be my data drive. when I try to start XP it blue screens immediately and resets the MB.

ASUS suggested that you must have all raid drives once you have one raid pair set up. So I put a fourth drive and configured these two drives as raid 1 pair. XP still crashes.

I'm really confused here and have no idea what to do next. I've done this very configuration on 3 other ASUS boards although none with the X38/ICH9r chipset. What's going on??? Help!! Suggestions?? anything!! 🙂
