Maximum Memory ?

With the crazy low prices of memory these days I can barely hold myself back from grabbing another 128 or 256mb's of Crucial!

Right now I've got 384 in there, and I'm running ME w/ a IBM RAID0. All these rumors about Win's memory maximums never seem to come together. So WHAT is the deal with the Windows 98/98SE/ME/2k memory maximums? Does VCHACHE actually bypass the maximum (so I can make all of my excess, unused RAM VCACHE)?

Help much appreciated!

Heres what I know:

In Win 95/98/ME going above 256-384MB RAM will not provide much if any performace increase.

However, Windows 2000 will love you more for the extra memory, Win2K has MUCH better memory management and can just use it more effeciently !

I went from 256-512 with a dual boot of win98 and win2000. I did not notice a performance increase at all in win98, however I did notice a slight increase in win2000. My advice is to get it because some programs will demand the extra ram.

The performance gain from going more than 128MB in Win 9x is minimal. In Win 2K, 256MB is the sweet spot but it never hurts to add more.

Yes yes, I've heard all of that :)
But vcache is an issue, disk performace increases with vcache are signifigant. I am pretty sure vcache is run through windows, so I THINK, though I'm not sure, that it should be limited by the same limitations that Windows has.

The actual LIMIT is around 4GB for Win9X, but the benefit of 196+ of RAM is EXTREMELY small under Win9X aunless your running a bunch of awfully memory demanding apps.
