Maximum distance from cable central office

I was just wondering if anybody knew the cutoff for the maximum distance service can extend from the cable central office, because I was told the reason I can't get service was because the lines just can't go that far. What's odd though is that where service stops going north on my road, it continues going west on another road. I tried Googling it, but even excluding DSL resulted in stuff related to DSL. So, any ideas?

adding distance would increase in latency, but i dont know if it even matters at these scales. idk how long cable can sustain a good signal, sry

Not very far at all without being boosted every few poles with signal increasement. Same for telephone ect.. but telephone requires less energy and sub stations are further apart.

Isn't cable based on Ethernet? I suppose this involves the use of an Ethernet repeater of some kind. Though I don't know the cost factor as compared to DSL extension solutions. There is a trend towards implementing Ethernet over optical fiber, which may cut the per km cost of transmission (provided the opto electronics don't get too expensive).

you may want to do a little research on docsis, you have to have line level amps, and return amps every so often to maintain the SNR. latency is not an issue, as docsis can handle somewhere around 30MB/s.

if they only have line level amps, and not return amps, the signal would not be able to get back from your pc to their equipment.
