Max temp for a P4 2.8E (prescott) processor?

I just built a system with a P4 2.8E processor. When I check the temp it is running at around 50 degrees celsius at idle. That seems a bit high to me and was wondering what temps other people with the same processor runs at. I am using the stock fan that came with it and it's on an Asus P4P800-MX motherboard.

Do you have good airflow in your case? Also, are you OCing at all? My 2.8 Prescott runs under 40C idle at stock settings and under 50C when overclocked to 3.2 GHz.

That's with the case open and no overclocking at all! That's why I'm concerned. The thermal pad that came with stock heatsink looked pretty crappy. I guess I could try scrapping the thermal pad off and apply some artic silver. Are you using the stock h/s and fan with the thermal pad?

prescotts are room warmers. I've seen 2 and neither got anywhere near 40c, even when idle. one was almost 70c under load and the other was low60c with stock hsf and arctic silver.

I have p4 3.2E, my Idle temp is 43 C and 53C under load. I use zelman 700A and AC5.
prescott is known for its higher temp

Keep in mind that the pad on the stock heatsink is really just one time use only. If you ever take the HS off, you should clean the HS and use new thermal compound like Arctic Silver when you put it back on.

That is, if you took the HS off "just to check", you should have replaced the TIM pad with something else.

I've got a 3.0E that idles about 62C (per BIOS on a GA 8IK1100) with the stock HS/F & AS2. Case side is open, and 2 80mm exhaust fans (L1As) right beside it. I scraped the original TIM off before I used it and applied artic silver with a single edge razor blade (not the little gob and twist) but will try it the other way tonight but I really don't think I have too much. I've re-seated the HS/F and made sure its not catching on anything. I'm not real happy with it................
