Max ram for Conroe without performance loss?

I remember on my AMD system, I was told over 2 Gigs of ram would accualy slow my system down.
Is this also true for Core 2 Duo and DDR 2?
What is the max Dual channel ram I should go with on a conroe rig?
2 gig DDR2 or 4 Gig DDR2 ?

Would you also go so far as to say 2 x 1gb DIMMs as opposed to 4 x 512mb DIMMs? Based on every other platform I have tested, all other things equal, 2 DIMMs are better than 4 for OCing for a variety of reasons.
